Slow warm up on my TDI

Featured Replies

So 4 days into my Rapid Ownership.

I find it a little slow to warm up to operating temp.

So today for example.

To get my Rapid upto the mid point on the temp gauge (90) I covered

12mile

Averaged 22mph

In 30 min.

The outside temp was 4.5c so not freezing

It is a 1.6 TDI 105. 64plate.

Anyone having similar or do I perhaps have a stuck thermostat?

Most diesels take 8 miles at that temp to warm up , an efficient engine generates heat slowly , get an R36 warm in half a mile !

Indeed - the 1.2 TSI is another one that takes a while to get warm. Very common with modern engines, both petrol and diesel.

Yep, diesels take longer to get to operaring temp.

I had a VX with the 1.9 CDTi engine, that was notorious for a faulty themostat to cause a slow warm up. Changed it and all was well again.

Not saying it's your problem though.

I travel to work around 10 miles. At 5:30 am the temps around 4-6 too. Mine usually is just starting to blow luke warm air when I arrive in work and the temps are around 1/4. Maybe a 1/3?

Sounds like your car working normally it takes a bit of time for them to warm and your car is new so it will need time to losses up give it a few weeks and see what it's like then

That's normal. My Octavia 1.9tdi was about the same. Diesels do take a little longer.

13 plate TDI is same especially when it is cool outside.

Yeah,

I do know that Derv's take longer. But I guess my only reference was my mk5 gttdi which was toastie within 5mile.

But that did have an auxiliary heater for the cabin, so hot air within a mile.

Outside temp obviously plays a massive part, on the way home the needle was on 90 within 6mile and the temp was closer to double digits.

So that's ok, as long as it's the "new norm".

Thanks y'all.

Found a grill modification for slow warming diesel engines. Struggling to find a part number for it though...

...not to my ToledoTSI, no, the water warms up in 4 miles and the oil in 6.

However, that sort of thing used to be popular in the 70's,

and winters are a lot harsher in central Europe than Britain though.
