any door mirror glass problems?

I was wondering if anybody with a Mk. 3 has come across the problem of door mirror glass falling off, as plagued many a Mk. 2, including mine. (No, my present ones seem fine at the moment!)

The cars are too young at the moment...i expect when several years old and the heating function has been used plenty its likely an inevitability.

No issues with mine nor did I have on my mkII.

Both my Mk. 2 ones nearly fell off - I re-fixed them with epoxy, luckily before they hit the road! The car wasn't very old when the first one loosened.

Do you mean that calssic Vw issue were the window falls down into the door?

I raised this query with Skoda in relation to a timeout on Mk3.....see response below in relation to Mk3 system. 

 

 

The mirrors work differently to previous models in that the MK1 heated mirrors were supplied with a direct and constant 12v linked to the rear window heater so it times out. The MK2 does not have a link/timeout from the rear window heater. The reason being that turning off the heating while on a motorway when it is raining or snowing was deemed to present safety concerns and from a point of view of safety for road traffic and particularly while on the motorway, the heater must not timeout by itself. With your current car the MK3, mirrors are supplied via a 12v PWM (Pulse Width Modulated) signal. This means that the mirrors can be pulsed with for example 50% PWM signal and would therefore only heat the mirror to 50% capacity. This value can drop as low as 5%. The duration of the PWN signal is calculated using information from road speed (via CAN) and ambient temperature. The higher the road speed the higher the PWM to take account for wind chill at high road speeds and the ambient temperature is an input for obvious reasons. I have included an example below. Also the system will not operate without the engine running and will switch off at temperatures in excess of +35 °C and there is also the option of switching them off using the joystick during mild weather

This precise control provides for a more positive impact for environmental factors and fuel consumption compared to the previous methods of mirror heating.

 

         Example:

 

T=-15°C & v=90 km/h  ->  heating intensity 100%

T=10°C  & v=0 km/h    ->  heating intensity  40%

^^ very interesting. Potentially thru could just be left switched on all the time, during winter at least....

That sounds nifty. I've just been happy about the fact you can turn them on or off independently from the rear window heaters, but it seems they're intelligent as well.

That sounds pretty clever. Did wonder how they worked as they do only seem to warm up when the conditions dictate.

Id assume if the outside temp probe fails then this would muck up the mirror heating.

I was wondering why mirror heating showed up in the multicolour dot under convenience users (or something) even though the rear screen heating was not on.

While on the subject of side mirror, does anyone also notice a significant "doubling" in the autodim section of the mirror. It is especially noticeable when driving during the day and someone follows with their headlights on. I can see 4 sets of lights, but only in the auto-dim part of the mirror, the edges are distortion free. (So I'm not drunk!)

I had the dial on the door on the left (or right for UK) switched to heater. But I though that this would only be active if the rear screen heater was on as well. Seems that it isn't. Life's full of surprises :)

Luckily it isn't tied to the rear window heating. That would be the most unnecessarily complicated system I can imagine. :D

that's not a reason not to do it :D
