Using pre FL scout fogs as DRLs

Featured Replies

Did it! It was dead easy.

I had to turn on DRL's by choosing one of two options:

1) Scandinavian - front dipped headlights, rear tail lights and number plates lights. On and off via the ignition.

2) North American - front dipped headlights only, on and off with the handbrake (with ignition on obviously).

I chose the second option. A simple tick box in 9-Central Electronics, long code helper.

Scrolling through all the different bytes I then came across the option to 'use front fogs as DRL's'. This swaps the dipped headlights for front fogs.

On my car this was already ticked though so was the default option.

Scrolling further through the list I then saw an option to reduce the brightness of the DRL's.

The option was something like this... 1 x 92 = 92. I changed the 92 to 60 (for 60% of the original brightness) so it ended up looking like... 1 x 60 = 60.

Clicked 'Do it' and all was done.

A few little annoyances that I can easily live with. The DRL's come on when the handbrake is released and turn off when the handbrake is applied. Not sure why, on my 2011 Superb the DRL's are on and off with the ignition. I guess the pre-FL was designed quite some time before DRL's came to the UK!

The second niggle is that the green dipped headlight warning on the dash comes on and off with the DRL's which is only going to fuel the likelihood of driving around with DRL's on only in rain or poor visibility when dipped headlights should be on instead. Luckily I'm pretty good at remembering to turn my lights on when needed.

I also saw the option to turn on the cornering foglights feature so did this too. They come on when dipped headlights are on, speeds are below 40kmh and the indicators are turned on or the steering wheel is turned. They fade in and out too which looks neat. Unlike my 2011 Superb both cornering fogs do not come on when in reverse though which for me is a good thing (when I reverse into my drive the neighbours think I drive around with my fog lights on all the time!).

Overall I'm chuffed!

Yeah, Mike Holroyd did mine to North American a couple of years ago. Since decided to take that off. I think if you've not got auto-lights, having the dipped-beam icon on the dash can be misleading. If you don't select use fogs as DRL, it'll be dipped-beam, which, without the sidelights can look strange.

Both fogs on reverse I think is a BCM function not a CECM function :( :(

Thanks Silver1011 for the update. Good to see you got it working and delighted that Scandinavian is an option. That's what I have on the vRS.

I wonder if it's then possible to replace the actual fog light unit with the one from a Scout with factory fit LED DRLs?

There a few other threads on this that I've been in and out of, mainly to do with the pre-FL vRS as this uses the same fog light unit as the Scout and is a more popular model on here.

The LED DRL units from the FL Scout should be a straight fit into the pre-FL Scout bumper, at worst you may need some new plastic rear mounts which are cheap enough from Skoda.

The issue will be the electrical connector (sure to be different as discussed on another thread - although not 100% confirmed on the Scout) and the activation of the blown-bulb warning by replacing what the car thinks should be halogen bulbs with LED's. Easily fixed with a simple and low cost load resistor but will involve cutting, joining, soldering and heat shrinking wires.

I would be tempted but am happy with halogen for now!
