Solar Eclipse 20 March 2015

Featured Replies

Anyone planning to do anything for it?

I have taken the day off and bought some solar film to try to make a filter for the camera (with the possibility of having some spare for bino's.

Only hope the weather is clear.

I've not made any plans personally but might drag my camera to work now you mention it. Another cheapo fix to shot the sun [which I've used for very long exposures] could be to affix a sheet of welding glass [dirt cheap off eBay] over your lens with a pair of elastic bands, now the only question is, where did I leave it...

Its looking like thick cloud

At least it will go dark

Still going to build the filter - can be used anytime then.

The solar film definitely works as I went out to the car at lunchtime and was sitting staring at the sun - weird feeling looking directly at the sun.

Just to qualify this, it needs to be level 14 glass, i.e. the darkest. Don't risk viewing the sun with anything lighter!

Finished my box filter last night (couldn't find a box the right size so butchered a shoebox so it is a tight fit over the lens) with a square aperture at the front (the aperture is smaller than the front lens but that won't matter as, even with a 500mm lens on a crop camera, the sun will probably only half fill the picture.

Just have to hope for good weather now

I might just wave my iPhone in the vague direction of the sky.

At 7 this morning a gorgeous sunny spring morning but now it's a as sunny as the inside of a dead cow !

I've got my FakePro camera set up on the front balcony.

It's been running since about 0720hrs so should have a nice timelapse video later.

Was planning on trying to get some shots, but it's thick cloud here so I doubt I'll see anything.

Likewise.  Just about as cloudy as it could be down here  :dull:

Some twonk on the news has just said we should be able to see a smily face looking back at us from behind the clouds.  My arse.

Gaz

made 4 pinhole cameras / projectors so far...   and observing now!

Doubt if I'll see anything in East London, too cloudy I'm afraid!

Couple of pics through the clouds in Exmouth. Point and click with Xperia Z3.
