BMW v Skoda diesel

Featured Replies

Skodas are getting very much built to a lower price & the £ vs Euro or some other currency has the UK Skoda getting over priced IMO.

Strange one seems to be the starting price being given for the New Superb.

Looks like you get lots of Materials starting from £18,700.

The Volkswagen Parents seem to be getting the RRP's of the smaller Skodas very wrong compared to the opposition.

Bland and rather boring cars and not a major player in the UK regardless of the Press Releases and spin.

The Power Surveys Customer Service Satisfactions from  Which and others will be interesting,

lets see if Skoda are still top 5.

Oh dear. The OP is clearly wearing a pair of these. I'm sorry, you'll never convince people that A derv Skoda is better than an derv BMW. They're just in different classes. Skoda = budget value for

And Skoda's VRS range too! :-) All not exactly performance cars. But a trim level option to fill a gap in the market for people who want that from a car.

When comparing cars/models I believe the common denominator should be what you actually get for your hard earned pound.

The VRS TDI DSG is roughly £25k RRP.

The current BMW 320d Msport auto is roughly £35k RRP for similar spec.

I have driven both, the BMW was nice, but not £10K nicer.

I'll see in three years. Lol ;-)

Until then,I'll put with a car they virtually every motoring journalist and magazine and paper says is a top quality csr

Not convinced BM can come up to their standard.Really cannot say they strike me as premium special brand.More in the Vauxhall Ford league nowadays. As I have said, great cars, but they really are not special.unless you have an m3,4,5,6 lol. Then they are a bit different

Are you smoking crack?

Sit inside even a bmw 1 series. Far higher quality. No nasty cheap plastics that scratch when you even look at them, thats what you get with a skoda.

Skoda is NOT a premium brand. I would put it a league above french muck and korean stuff but definately not up with bmw / mercedes / audi

The inside of my 8 year old bmw looks almost new. No dash scratches or wear on anything. When i last took it for tyres even the garage said bloody hell the inside of that car is immaculate

To be fair I have come from a very loaded last gen C Class and can confirm that the touch points/dashboard/etc in the Octavia are spot on.

Yes there are some low rent plastics about the place, however I'm not generally touching them with my hands.

Let's not mention the new gen C Class.....

Re a  BMW 320d M sport 184ps Auto.

Talk to some other supplier because £27,000 is enough to get you one.

I paid the extra 10k and although it is steep I know in 5 years I will still have a car that drives like New, my average mileage is probably about 6000 per year but the trade in value will be far greater than if I'd have opted for the Octavia vrs, I previously had a vw bora tdi that I bought New and kept for 12 years and traded in with 100000 on the clock, it still drove like a new car and kept its looks without 1 blemish on the paintwork, I can't say a skoda could boast the same tbh, I recently got my son a 1.4 16v skoda fabia 05 plate with 49000 on the clock and although it drives great there are one or two bits on the paintwork that needs touched up and the lacquer is a bit thin on some parts that you wouldn't expect ( back piller).

Suppose it all comes down to the fact you get what you pay for, I'm getting old and like my little bits of luxury and suppose a bit of snobbery value comes into it aswell, in an ideal world my Mrs would get rid of her insignia Sri and get a vrs Octavia and I could borrow it lol, would still stick with my 320d msport tho for family journeys, the bmw is the ultimate motorway cruiser and eats up the miles in comfort

To late for talking to other suppliers.... Merc and BMW sales staff wouldn't play ball so I looked at alternatives....

I now have a MKIII VRS.

Plus it was the easiest sales discussion I have ever had.

I'll see in three years. Lol ;-)

Lol! This is priceless. BMW not a premium brand, more in league with vauxhall and ford? Ummm. Not sure many would agree with you on that.

I'm sorry but the interior on the Octavia is absolute cack when compared to any new BMW imho. I'm a big fan of both makes but wouldn't dream of seeing Skoda as anything other than a good value budget brand.

I don't think you can compare an old 318d to a new Octy vRS. Of course the Octy has more power and standard kit but can't compete on handling dynamics really. A better comparison would be Octy vRS TDI vs new F30 320d M-sport. The skoda is abit cheaper and has more space and practicality but in all other key areas the BMW thumps it in my view :-)

I took a Mk3 Octy vRS TDI for a testdrive back when I had a F20 120d Msport and it felt waaay slower than the BM. Ride and handling were significantly inferior also.

driven a BMW for nearly 5 years.Sat inside umpteen BMW models,Had an A4 1.8T quattro Audi, had many spins in a friends Carrera 4S.Nothing special about any single one of them. So,got a bit of a know about interiors :-)

There is absolutely nothing to seperate them now.Anyone who thinks they have something special with a BMW is,shall we say ,wrong.Or I would have bought a new one

Nothing special whatsoever.Great cars, but no better than a mondeo. In any way, shape or form.I lie.I said the real M models are,and they are

And my other half had a 1 series,Embarrsssing,got shot after 6 months.lol

135i quality though :-)

Obbiously you have a BM ,:-) lol

Got one of each on the drive :-).

I love our vRS (on my third now) but have to say the BMW is the more premium brand imho. I'll admit the M135i is abit special tho!

Been seriously looking at nearly new BMW 330 M sport auto's and having sat in a few, it is defo more premium feeling than my MK2 fl vRS.

Not gone beyond sitting in it in case I take it out and find the sub 6 second 0-60 with mid 40mpg may sway me away from my Skoda.

The XDrives are quicker again but a little more pricey.

Never said it was special.

Dull as dishwater to be frank

lol..another BM driver ;-)

Look,Ive said BMW's briliant.Just IMHO nothing to seperate most cars nowadays, unlike many years ago..For example the Ford Mondeo is excellent and the only thing seperating thar from a BMW (and for goodness sake, remember I love BM's and have not dissed them at all!!) is the badge

Cars are brilliant nowadays.Very hard to maintain the 'executive' image

Depends what you define as better though.

As a Skoda owner and driver. The F30 is a better car.....though the price reflects that. And with discounts out there it's not really such a big difference.

You're not really comparing eggs with eggs, 10 year old BMW to a newer Octavia. I've had experience recently of 2010 Octavia (Diesel vRS), 2005 A4 (S-line 2.0t) and today I test drove a 2007 320d (Msport) as well as driving a mates 320d before now.

So all roughly the same ages (ok, Octavia was a facelift but the basic car is from 2006) and all sporty versions. For me, the BMW I drove today was head and shoulders above the other two, felt solid, well made and drove lovely. All the interior materials felt plush, seats were much nicer than the Octavias, dash and controls felt more solid and better put together. The Octavia had done less miles but had a few slight rattles coming through at times.

The Audi just doesnt feel anything special, could be because it's done a few miles and showing its age, so maybe not a fair comparison.

All that said, I'm not taking anything away from the Octavia, as others have said, it's built to a price, there's a good £9000 price gap between them new. Is the BMW £9k better than the Skoda? I dont know, thats for each person to decide but I cant honestly believe anyone would think like for like the Skoda is overall better than the BMW for fit and finish and overall quality. The bloke that had the Octavia now has a MK7 Golf GTi, that might well be a step up to the BMW but then you'd need to compare to the latest 3 series for fairness.

The comments comparing the BMW to a Vauxhall/Ford, I cant take seriously. I've not driven any for an extended period of time but have had brief drives in a 08 Mondeo and we have two 2011 Zafiras at work, neither are anywhere near the BMW.

Each to their own I guess!

Nonsense.The whole post :-)

Had a very recent 320 d m sport to play with.Special? Not at all.Interior better? Not at all. No idea why people keep saying there is a huge Gulf when clearly tbete is not.i have no idea

Me,I want a knackered 15 year old Lotus Elise.Rubbish in every way interior wise, but my ideal car

The BMW is Not better than a Ford Mondeo on so many fronts. All of you stressed out pretend executive owners please chill.Your car is in no way special or premium. If you have a beautiful, quality M series fine.Everyone else,Mondeo beats you hands down.Never get annoyed, however, never seen so much nOnsense bias posted on a car thread in 14 years.
