Just swapped my 318d for a vRS with DSG

So much more kit in the Skoda.Such a lovely place to be.A much nicer drive.A far better looking car.

All round,I cannot say how pleased I am with my swap.Stunning and solid. And 20 mpg more !

Oh dear. The OP is clearly wearing a pair of these. I'm sorry, you'll never convince people that A derv Skoda is better than an derv BMW. They're just in different classes. Skoda = budget value for

  • 8 speed ZF in a BMW is a mighty fine gearbox.

And Skoda's VRS range too! :-) All not exactly performance cars. But a trim level option to fill a gap in the market for people who want that from a car.

How does performance compare?

Mmm would you be saying this if you still had the Beamer ? Just a thought ;) , in all seriousness though I'm looking at the mk3 octy estate in silver or white looks stunning

Does that mean the 318d was the c140 bhp model?

I drove a colleagues 318d the other week and really didn't like it - heavy steering and uncomfortable seats were my main issues.

A much nicer drive. Really? What age was the 3 ie which model?

Also be interested in what model spec and year 3 series. The new shape  (test drove a 64 plate) is very nice to drive. Far more feel than the mk3 Octavia I test drove.

But this was the 320 Msport.

Though both the mk2FL and mk3 are nicer to drive than the Audi A4......that's a really disappointing car!

07 reg so previous model(se,wow, you get rear parking sesors.lol),but been given 320d m sport for a loan car.

Honestly?BMW lovely but I'd take the vrs any day.Interior, performance, all of it

Think my car would list about  £28k with the extras. Not far off the same price.Know what I prefer :-)

forgot to say.Mine was the lowest bhp  (120?)but I had no gripe whatsoever with th the car or its performance. The Octavia is simply a better car

My 320d M-Sport is a fantastic drive, much better than anything FWD and VAG that I've driven. Some people don't like the heavy steering, but I guess they must be too used to the electro-assisted rubbish! it all makes sense when pushing on in the bends.

But hey that's just me, Horses for courses and all that!

We all get new car tinted glasses! :sun:

07 and pre LCI cars do look a little dated now, but the last of the E90's and post LCI still look great IMO.

Enjoy your new Octy!

I also went from an E90 318 but mine was the petrol, and a petrol Octy vRS.

I thought overall the Octavia is a much better car to be in. More kit, more power, and an absolute bargain.

But I loved the steering in the 318i. Best handling car I've ever owned. Gave the best responses and feel when driving. It was just incredibly fun. Mine was the LCI version with the uprated HP and I thought it was a quick car. But the vRS blows it out the water speed wise. Plus the BMW was a lot less nosy on the road.

Overall though the vRS is the better car for me though. Some things I miss about the BMW yeah but, the vRS has it's own charm which I love too.

I found the BMW incredibly unreliable though. I don't know if I had a Friday car or what, but it was always in the garage having something done.

The F30 though is another matter. I test drove a 320i MSport F30 before getting the Octavia and that's a whole other beast. Just fantastic to in every way.

Have to agree the F30 is a very very hard car to beat......apart from the £ front! It's not cheap.

There is nothing wrong with the mk3 but it's not in the same league as the BMW, no offence or negative point to the Skoda, they are just totally different cars.

Mk3 Octavia vRS are certainly OK as a car.

But then when it is the Dirty Diesel we are talking about here there is that  issue when you arrive someplace and people come out because they think the Taxi has arrived.

But then with the older BMW,

you pull up any place and they think the Carry Out Delivery driver is coming.

BMW carry out delivery drivers?! You must live in an up-market area George.

They all drive 90's Japanese cars round mine.

Not like I get take-out much....... ;)

Old BMW's, thats just about 4 years these days,

we know how cheap they are when they get past 110,000 miles and need the big service or the Indicator & lights reset.

Rwd of the bmw is far superior to any fwd vag motor

You had the 318d with the older m47 engine so only 140bhp iirc and mpg isn't that great.

How new is the octavia? Remember the bmw is now 8 years old so you have to bring that into the equation.

A brand spanking 3 series in msport form (similar to vrs) would be more of a fair comparison in 320d guise (184 bhp)

A fairer comparison would be a 2007 octavia elegance / se in 140bhp guise as a comparison.

Then that changes the whole ball game

Exactly,

premium brand vs budget brand  and try to find a good one for Much Cheapness because they are a lottery.

Good transport for not much money & plenty of bits available because so many have problems and end up scrapped.

Im on 96k miles looks like the death of my car is near :o

Service myself and have a scanner. Simples. Just serviced it last week for £80 all in

I doubt it is near when serviced and maintained and the correct fluids used.

Its nice if you find one with the mileage and that has had the Full Big Service with all Fluids & Bulbs replaced.

I bought one once for £2,500 with the last Service Invoice & Parts list of £1,200.

The person had to sell it because they told the Main Dealer to 'Do the full service'  but never asked how much it would be.

I own a 320d msport and have drove a vrs and got to admit the vrs is a lovely drive but in my opinion the bmw is far superior, got to compare like for like, and a 318d aint exactly a sports model,

ok,5 years with a 318d.Never expected a sports car.Obviously! Brilliant car,cheap to run

Driven the new 320d m sport.Brilliant car great fun

However, how people can say say cheap compared to premium brand is slightly beyond me.Felt no comparable differences in interior quality or performance. Not at all.Skoda actually felt classier. And Im a lawyer who should be driving a 3 series BM!

Marginal difference between these brands now, just a name

Major difference can often be the Coffee Machine in the showroom,

& the Clothing worn by the Salespeople, and the Company (Demonstrator) they drive.

The Skoda Sales Person might aspire to work for BMW and not Skoda, the BMW sales person only goes to Skoda if its on the Promotion Climb,

they would go to Audi but then that requires really being up your own backside.

Lol

My sales chap was more than happy working for Skoda.Brilliant training etc

Coffee....saw no machine! Got a nice cup made though

All in all, quality experience without the pomposity I have experienced for 5 years...its just a car and no,you aren't doing me a favour, I'm looking after you! As I say,not moaning about my bm experience but they aren't Rolls Royces!

They're both built to a price. The Skoda is just built to a lower one!

When they're new, Skoda's look great! But I've found they just don't wear their miles well. Cabin rattles and interior wear seem to be worse in Skoda's compared to other cars. One on the reasons I ultimately jumped ship.... To a BMW haha!

  • Author

I'll see in three years. Lol ;-)

Until then,I'll put with a car they virtually every motoring journalist and magazine and paper says is a top quality csr

Not convinced BM can come up to their standard.Really cannot say they strike me as premium special brand.More in the Vauxhall Ford league nowadays. As I have said, great cars, but they really are not special.unless you have an m3,4,5,6 lol. Then they are a bit different
