BMW v Skoda diesel

Featured Replies

When you google German Car Faults.

BMW / MINI & Ford can both be considered as German cars for some models, as can Skoda from the parent company Volkswagen Group & the Engine Production Lines.

If they are not German in Design & Manufacture they can be in the Location of the Bean Counters that penny pinch

on important components like Chain Tensioners and Water Pumps, while spending Billions on Advertising and Sponsorship,

and Customers Money purchasing vehicles is what pays for that in the long run.

These are not all an Internet Myth.

The tables compiled and the News Paper & Motoring Journal articles might be from Warranty Company Claims,.

But the truth is in there,

Everything in life luckily is not a reliable as a 'Golf',  Octavia,  or even a Bavarian Manufacturers cars.

Under 3 year old cars that are getting handed back & a used car over 5 years old are rather different vehicles

& Service & Maintenance Schedules & Regimes have lots to do with a vehicles longevity,

and a Specced up Business Use Vehicle does not necessarily make a good Used Buy unless you can keep Servicing & Maintaining it,

using the correct fluids & consumables.

& ones that change hands several times and each time have less professional or correct servicing become more of a liability often.

Oh dear. The OP is clearly wearing a pair of these. I'm sorry, you'll never convince people that A derv Skoda is better than an derv BMW. They're just in different classes. Skoda = budget value for

  • 8 speed ZF in a BMW is a mighty fine gearbox.

And Skoda's VRS range too! :-) All not exactly performance cars. But a trim level option to fill a gap in the market for people who want that from a car.

Nonsense.The whole post :-)

Had a very recent 320 d m sport to play with.Special? Not at all.Interior better? Not at all.

Because they aren't.

But neither is the Octavia VRS....

They are both midrange cars with 2.0 TD engines, 'sporty' styling and stiffer suspension. If you wanted something special, buy a Cossie Ford or old M3.

Yes the new Octy interior looks more exciting than the E90 interior, but they are cars designed nearly a decade apart. The Octy has cheaper materials and isn't bolted together as well as the BM. Just wait until the rattles start....

If you compare the Octy to the F30 interior, well I'm sorry the BM wins hands down.

No one will convince you otherwise, fair enough. But I don't think you will convince people either.

Not trying to convince anyone of anything.lol

Just saying,BMW's great,but not head a shoulders above normal cars.Would kill for a 4 series....hah

Look,I bought a £28k Skoda simply because I like it :-)

Good.

Expensive for what is basically a SEAT.  but then that is how Volkswagen Pricing works in the UK.

The BMW is Not better than a Ford Mondeo on so many fronts. All of you stressed out pretend executive owners please chill.Your car is in no way special or premium. If you have a beautiful, quality M series fine.Everyone else,Mondeo beats you hands down.Never get annoyed, however, never seen so much nOnsense bias posted on a car thread in 14 years.

What was different/better in the M series that you drove (which one?) compared to the normal BMW out of curiosity? Having driven a M3 last month I couldnt say there was much difference over a normal one aside from the motor obviously. Fit and finish was the same as the 320d next to it in the car park.

Just to throw my 2 pence worth in, I have driven many cars from VAG, Audi, VW and Skoda, older PD engines and newer CR engined cars, VAG have a very high standard when it comes fit, finish and drivability, however BMW take a different approach to trim levels, they keep things simple and functional.

I have at the moment a 116d, it is a 2.0 litre diesel, about 120bhp I think and sounds quite crude and rattly, however the equivalent VAG engine is a 1.6 turbo diesel, it is not as crude, from a driving point of view the BMW pulls hard where as the VAG 1.6 is weak IMO.

Most BMW's I have ever driven have had good performance, even a 520d pulled well.

We now have an e91 330d, this is plain inside without any fancy bits, a simple SE trim but what it hasn't got hasn't been missed.

I am returning to VAG when my 116d lease ends in October as the new Golf GTE has exceptionally low BIK at 5%, if the BMW had matched this I would have probably stayed with BMW.

For the very same price as your 116d 2.0TD BMW is it only a 1.6TD CR that is available or can a 2.0 TD be had?

Are BMW not changing over now to the 3 Cylinder TD 1500 cc Engines.

We seem to keep getting into what was and not what is now as we reach the end of the Euro 5 Emissions,

and the Euro 5.5 Euro 6 they thought they would get away with.

In 2016 on they will be back to noisy diesels of Old, and getting the most out of the smallest & lightest engines they can.

Hopefully BMW can get the Longevity of these engines correct.

Or they might just go the VWG way and change Model Productions to new models more often as

they say that is the Buying Publics new habits.

Actually its the Lease for Business use that is changing, and get a car on Lease for Private use,

and do not have to worry about being landed with a 4 or 5 year old liability.

'Inbuilt Obsolenscence' is now Software & Electrical because in this day and age it should not be Corrosion.

Someone forgot to tell this to VW though.

Odd that the French Manufacturers sort out decades of Corrosion, Wiring and Electric issues as the Germans have more issues.

I also have one of each sitting on the drive way, my 2013 Superb FL and the wife has a 2015 BMW 320d SE (replaced a 2014 Octavia SE), all company cars.

I have compared initial thoughts here to the wife's previous 2014 Octavia SE, my post was number 11 http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/345314-bmw-2-series-active-tourer/

No doubt the BMW has a premium badge, but that is all, the badge has premium appeal, the car itself is not premium, at least not in 320d SE saloon guise. For the price I expected far more and have been quite disappointed. The disappointment comes as I was expecting something really special, and its just not. There's nothing exactly wrong with it, but it isn't what the motoring journalists make it out to be (not in standard spec anyway) - read my post mentioned above for a few more details and comparisons to the Octavia.

Since Friday afternoon we have covered approximately 500 miles in the BMW, one area where it really does impress is the fuel efficiency given the performance available, 60+ mpg over this weekends 500 miles. That includes a 20 mile drive through central London. Not many 180+bhp cars can do that.

We're all familiar with the Driver Power survey, this takes into account reliability, build quality, practicality, running costs, ease of driving, performance, road handling, ride quality, seat comfort and in-car tech. In 2014 Skoda came out top - you can't ignore the opinions of 50,000 people, plus the motoring press also praise the Skoda brand these days http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/car-manufacturers/skoda/10018605/Skoda-from-laughing-stock-to-top-dog.html

I think people can be fazed by having a 'premium' badge on the bonnet, that alone does not make a good car, but gives people a 'feel good' factor, and to some, nothing else matters. The Skoda is a good car, as is the BMW, it all depends what you want/expect/perceive etc.

Very much horses for courses.

As to the 50,000 people.

Skoda first registered 66,000 cars in the UK in 2013,

that was a small rise than in the previous years, and then a few more in 2014.  They do not sell Skoda in the US.

So when there were survey results recently there was a thread asking how many had taken part in that Survey.

Only a few replied saying they had not,

none had.

So maybe we need another Poll asking how many of the thousands of Briskoda members have filled in Survey forms about great Customer Services or Satisfaction.

Something odd about survey results IMO,

maybe too many Dealership Employees sitting around filling in forms rather than providing Customer Services.

Sending out Notices on Service Campaigns that should really be Recalls.

VORSPRUNG DURCH TECHNIK.

What they do not know will not harm them.

For the very same price as your 116d 2.0TD BMW is it only a 1.6TD CR that is available or can a 2.0 TD be had?

From the point of view of emissions the answer is no.

I drove a 1.6 CR Audi A3, the gearing was dreadful and power delivery was dreadful, almost flat, it is many years since I have had drop a diesel car from top gear on the motorway to build speed, most just pull away in top from 50 to 80 easily, I must admit the 170 ti Yeti was great.

My 116d is an "M" trim car, it has 18" alloys, fantastic seats, sat nav, i-drive, great steering wheel and gear knob all adorned with an "M" however, it does not have xenons, auto wipers, temperature gauge, auto headlights or much else really but I really don't miss those things.

Fuel economy is also good on the BMW, it is travelling 600 miles Monday to Friday from home to work, it competes this on £60 worth of diesel, I do not hyper mile either, it is outside lane full speed ahead over the M62, the onboard computer thingy is showing 60 mpg average most of the time.

To put that in context then, what is the RRP of them, and how much can they be purchased for?

Edited by goneoffSKi

my 116d was £25k it is a 2.0td and is October 2012, the Audi was an A3 S line and approx the same price and same year.

My other half has a 2011 audi a3 sline with dsg

Nice car but again dash plastics aren't upto that of the equivalent bmw.

I drove it today and the steering is unbelievable light and the auto dsg didnt do it for me. Seemed very jerky if you get what i mean. Felt like id just passed my test and couldnt use the clutch properly yet

You not liking them is not the same as them being no good,  is your BMW an Automatic?

No manual

My brother and old boy have auto bm's a 325d and 335d
