Would it be better to consider LED bulbs? They've come a long way in the past few years, some arguably almost as good as HID.

I wouldn't bother.

 

LED headlights are great when using optics designed for LED. However, a drop in LED conversion kit in optics designed for halogen bulbs don't tend to work as well.

 

The light isn't as focused so although you might get more foreground lighting, distance lighting (where you need it) tends to suffer.
