Featured Replies

Probably already been covered but can't find it. I've got 55w 6000k HID'S to fit to my mk2 pre fl vrs.I've been told they need coding and I've been told they won't need coding please someone point me in the right direction

Why wouldn't you fit the canbus ones?

Unless you do a good job of fitting either I would not bother, there are thousands of HID kits fitted badly dazzling thousands of other drivers.

Please do a good job of fitting them and get them checked for beam direction so as you don't join the masses.

ive got after market xeions on mine. Fairly sure its got the canbus thing as well to cancel out the bulb not working on the dash.

I know you need to get the 35w hid kit coded.

But a 55w hid kit might work without coding or cancelers

maybe but if you ask people like HID direct etc they will say it wont damage anything

unfortunately mike they will be the people a lot of people will ask and make big mistakes following their advice

The advice on HID kits is simple.

Avoid 55W, go for 35W.

Non-CANBUS + coding.

Avoid CANBUS friendly.

Go for 4300K (OEM) or 5000K Max.

I have my own views on HIDs, and that won't change, but the constant same arguments mean I don't get involved in discussions about them or code them in for anyone now.

Yes Mike, & you know my views... & and the reasons behind them. 3rd time lucky is a fallacy IMO.

1 year ago I purchased 35w 5000K HID at that time I do not know what is a CANBUS  . I install them there were no extra wire loom for error cancelling or anything like that . It was just plug and play I installed it and it works no coding needed .

Now I purchased a 55w 5000k . I asked the dealer to give me the CANBUS one . He said that the error cancelers are already installed in the ballast . It was also a plug and play no wiring or coding needed . I guess I got lucky first time with the CANBUS one . So I guess there are some HID who does not even need any extra wiring for CANBUS .

I suggest if you do not have these buy a normal one install it and code it with VCDS .

Yes, as has been mentioned there are two versions:

1) CANBUS friendly or simply CANBUS

2) Non-CANBUS

The CANBUS friendly versions have built-in error-cancelers which prevent the blown-bulb warning from appearing on the dash.

It is widely documented on here that the CANBUS friendly versions have been known on some Octavia's over time to damage the car's electrical systems, BCM's, CCM's, wiper motor's etc. Some cars are fine, some model years suffer more than others. 2010 models for example are prone for the BCM failure where the front passenger side indicator turns on and illuminates permanently.

The non-CANBUS version does not have the built in error-cancelers and when fitted will generate the blown-bulb warning on the dash.

To avoid this the car can be coded so that it thinks factory fitted xenon (or HID) headlights have been fitted to it from the factory. A special cable and VCDS software installed on a laptop is required to do this but this then makes the installation much safer from the cars electrical systems perspective.

There is a UK seller on eBay that sell both types of kit, they are reputed to be one of the best, with many members on here successfully running these kits...

I bought the non-CANBUS version recommended to me &, with advice, installed them fine. After a very short time the BCM blew (O/S/F indicator lit permanently). After removal, dealer replaced the BCM. I then tried a 2nd installation (again checking advice). Again the BCM blew very quickly! This too was replaced under warranty.

The installation procedure was correct in every way, yet the car clearly didn't like them :wonder:

That was it, no more HIDs for me!

Did you get them coded?

2010 models seem to be picky on non canbus system. I had for long time slim canbus kit and no issues. Had a Friend who decided to install h8 hids on fogs non canbus and the bcm fried.

Yes, like I said "correct in every way".

Mine's a late 2012.

Early 2013 car with non canbus HIDs here, been fine for 2 yeaars now.

  • 2 months later...

Hi guys just been reading this thread about HIDs canbus friendly and non canbus kits. I have bought mine and fitted these now to my 2011 Octavia vrs MK2 facelift. The kit i bought was from auto bulbs direct - here http://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/H7-HIDS4U-Ultimate-35W-HID-Conversion-Kit.html?bulb_search=car

Now im in two minds either to leave the kit in the car or remove it as i seen control modules can or have been blowing. I dont know if anyone on here and had in issue with the kits from auto bulbs direct which i think are part of hids4u

has anyone got a link on how to do the coding pls?

I know you need to get the 35w hid kit coded.

But a 55w hid kit might work without coding or cancelers

I had a 50w kit installed and tried all sorts of coding to no avail... I still got errors thrown up whenever I used both dipped and main beam. Switched to a 35w kit and all is now fine.

If your car is as your signature says (a mark 1 Octavia), then no coding is needed for a non-canbus kit, and you've posted this in the wrong forum.

it is only the canbus based Octavia 2 models that require coding

i already have the proper xenons on my mk1, but im breaking that now,  and ive replaced it with a mk2

Is it a pre-facelift, or a facelift car?

Several members have killed expensive electronics by fitting HIDs into a facelift, even when seemingly coded correctly.

the mk1 doesn't need anything programming

I thought you were on about adding HID to your mk2?
