Car Stolen - Lock/Code change cost

Featured Replies

Morning all. This could potentially be better placed in the general forums, but it's a bit more homey round here...

The other night we were burgled and I had my car keys stolen, and the took my car. (Boo...) Mates car was also stolen, along with a few laptops, xbox, TV's the lot.

The police recovered my car using ANPR, but unfortunately there was no keys with it. I've got the spares here but with someone still having my keys I'm going to have to get the locks changed.

Any idea how much this will set me back, and where to get it done? I guess it's covered on insurance, but not worth it with the increase to my premium I expect!

Cheers,

Chris

You might be able to get your spare re-coded so that your old key stolen never works the ignition again.  However I suspect whilst that removes the ability to start the car, it could still be used in the barrel to physically open it.

Yeah I was thinking that might be fine for the next couple months, we're moving away soon so I might try and find somewhere secure and out of the way to park it for the time being.

I had my car stolen about 10 months ago as well following a house burglary during the day. (The thieves took my spare set of keys, found where I worked from my pay slips in a filing cabinet, drove to my works address, and stole the car from the car park!)

Through the powers of social media and forum posts on here, like you, I got my car back! :)

I'm insured through Adrian Flux (Equity Red star) and was covered up to £500 in lock and key change replacements with no effect on my NCB or the need to pay my excess!

The total bill came just over £400 if memory serves me right, but I did choose to go through my preferred garage for convenience and piece of mind that no more bad luck was going to happen with the car.

Cheers for that Ryan. I'll check my policy then, if there's a clause like that (not affecting my NCB) that would be a godsend. As a student with only a few years NCB as it is I definitely can't afford to lose it.

Funniest part is, they must have found my housemates car keys first (a 57 plate Clio, his keys were on the living room table), moved it to the front of the house and then found my keys (which they had to break down a locked internal door for) and ended up leaving his car with the keys in the ignition and taking mine instead!
