Driving on bad coilpack

Featured Replies

I have got a coilpack down on cylinder 2 will it be ok driving 10 miles to work in the morning as I have a new one coming in for me

Depends at what point of deterioration it is, trouble is you won't be able to see to know. When I had one on the way out eventually the wiring melted inside. Took the pack out and the wiring just unravelled. Was a bit of a pig of a job to dig it all out after. It was in my old Seat and it had however been failing for a while with a very minor misfire and no code thrown. Suddenly started misfiring badly and engine light came on, 5 miles later it melted.

What I would say is drive around it, no heavy accelerations, keep gears a bit lower so the engine doesn't labour, take it easy but don't forget your breakdown cover card! Worst that can happen is probably what happened to me, stuck in a lay by on a Welsh A road at 11 pm. If it does start misfiring bad pull over, hopefully avoid a melted mess and possible fire.

I don't really want to advocate driving a car when something is possibly going to fail but life goes on, and sometimes we have to take calculated risks. You'll be closest to knowing how bad it is, the car will confirm it one way or the other!

Unburnt fuel into the cat cant be a good thing.  I would get the bus!

Upto you though.  Get another as a spare!

new "one" - I would personally change all 4 and keep the 3 good ones as spares in the boot for this eventuality happening again. :)

I personally wouldn't drive a car with a dodgy coilpack.

Of you really have to drive it. Unplug the bad coil

Managed to organize alternative transport so no need to run the risk now ☺

Probably for the best all things considered!

And a full set if a good idea as chances are another will follow soon after...

And unplug the injector to save fuel going through the cylinder unburnt and damaging your cat. Though your probably at work now!

mines had a bad coil pack for some months now, hardly use the car hence why it hasnt been changed.. but in 2nd gear between 2-3k i get a miss fire under heavy acceleration but all other gears it goes through the revs fine..

all started when i switched coil packs with what my cupra had  :|

DOES THE EML ALWAYS COME ON WITH A FAULTY COIL PACK?

Ring your nearest skoda dealer and book it in for the recall. Presuming it's not been done now it has a misfire. It won't cost you anything.

DOES THE EML ALWAYS COME ON WITH A FAULTY COIL PACK?

NO ;) well on my Seat it didn't come on for that until it was misfiring very badly. Might throw a code for misfiring cylinder but again mine didn't straight away. Surprising really you'd think it would, part of the reason why it got so bad is that the ecl wasn't upfront about it. Kept coming on for Lambda 2...Anyway that's another story.
