Diesel drivers being taken for a ride

Featured Replies

I heard a brief interview on the Simon Mayo show on BBC R2 earlier and an RAC spokesman said thet the WHOLESALE price of diesel is near as dammit on parity (ie = to) petrol, so why the extra price at the pump?

Sold as a 'green' alternative a few years ago (wrongly?), diesel drivers continue to be ripped off it seems.

It is shocking at the moment, I paid 119.9ppl for petrol last week on the bike and 99.9ppl for diesel in the car the week before that. Normally I would expect it to be the other way around!

Supply and demand, simply.

"Diesel drivers being taken for a ride"

Where are we going? :giggle:

Heading for the dysfunctional public transport system

As if petrol drivers aren't taken for a ride either, £260 for 170bhp petrol car despite the evidence showing diesels are not green either.

I remember when it was cheaper than petrol but then Diesel cars became popular so the price crept up above petrol.

I remember when Diesel was cheaper than Leaded Petrol because it was just Derv.

Back in the days when you changed the Engine Oil every 3,000 miles in a Diesel and petrols were starting to get oil changes at 6,000 miles.

Obviously that was when you still did De-cokes on the petrols and got much cheaper insurance on a Diesel.

Not all that long ago really, just about when North Sea Oil was Discovered, and many ripoffs changed, and new ones began.

We used to have so much LPG that Grants were given out and mostly taken up by Taxi & Hire Car owners,

but some Private Diesel Car Owners applied for and got a Grant, and got shot of the Heavy Oil Burners.

I personally think it is fair to say any driver/motorist gets taken for a ride regardless of the fuel type we run, we get hammered for tax as we are sitting ducks, easy targets and we pay it because we have no way of not paying it.

We will always be an easy target and therefore owning and running a vehicle will always be expensive.

from a barrel of crude oil there is roughly 12 gallons of diesel and 19 gallons of petrol produced plus other spin offs.

when not so many diesel cars were on the road, diesel was cheaper than petrol due to there being a surplus after refining the petrol

due to the increased demand for diesel, the four remaining united kingdom refineries can not meet the demand, as it takes a different type of refining process to produce more diesel per barrel of crude, we now import it from Europe

Excise Tax is the same petrol or diesel.

Diesel giving crude has to come from farther away I think as the closer stuff ie North Sea, Libya gives more petrol and we insist on using low sulphur diesel which is more rare and more expensive.

Other than the reason that the motor trade give that less sell, which is not actually here or there.

Why do diesel engine cars cost more to buy than petrol ones and have for a few decades now.

It can not be the more technically advanced engines and components, or additional costs of materials and manufacturing.

So is it because they can charge more for a diesel car and they all decided they would.?

a bit like Concorde in the 70's, George. BA asked the passengers (high flying businessmen whose PA's booked the tickets) how much they thought it cost. They all thought it was more so they bunged the price up lol

Thing is, diesel drivers have been well and truly shafted; 'buy a diesel', they said. 'It's green and eco' they said. Now we're taking it up the :moon:

Heavier crankshafts. pistons, combustion chambers, heavier all round components, more metal more Euros?

Catalytic convertor more.  Euro6 spec more expensive to meet I hear.

Good,

but you might get a bit more weighing in pig iron, but not so sure that it costs more to manufacture than Alloys.

How many deaths a year can be contributed to PMs from diesel, thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds?

Like the ad below but like Tubular Bells and The Exorcist.

Gabriel Mizrahi could have at least found a pic of a French autoroute for a story about Paris rather than a British motorway with a Marks and Spencer lorry on it :D

My nice low mileage 1.9TDi may never live out it's natural life span at this rate. :(

left alone without bureaucratic euro intervention and hippies, our trusty 1.9 TDi PD's would outlive us :D

Many cars that people took the £2,000 for in the last UK Scrappage Scheme would have outlived the Euro 5 Emission Diesels

they put the 2 grand down as the deposit on.

Infact there are some of those already scrapped.
