No Cold Air from Climatronic Air Con - Regassed

Hmm, I'd read that often when the compressor goes, the centre shaft breaks, and so no longer spins the internals when the aux belt is still driving it.

Where is the compressor RPM measured from?

  • No other fault codes. My reasoning was that if it wasn't the pressure sensor then it wasn't going to get fixed as the rest of the parts are too expensive (compared to value of car). For less than £30

  • So how did you know the compressor and condensor were at fault? Or was it just a case of taking bits off and checking?

  • No idea what equipment they used.   They charged £72 for full diagnosis.    I think they did a nitrogen pressure test to identify that the compressor was leaking and screwed.

Mine was spinning fine I think. Not sure where it measures the rpm though.

I was told the compressor had broken up inside but not that the shaft had snapped.

It's more likely to partially seize than break up inside. do you have means of testing nm output? Also the ampereage can you read that?

17:03:55 Group 002: Compressor

  0.815 A  Compressor Current (actual)

  0.820 A  Compressor Current (specified)

  1000 /min  Compressor Rotations

  1.2 Nm  Compressor Load

1.2 nm output? Is that with ac on and on max cooling? If so i can fart harder than that. Compressor is seizing up inside. I recommend whoever does the work that they flush the ac system when they change the compressor otherwise old swarf in the system will contaminate the new compressor.

Can anyone tell me what air con gass pressure should it be in a 05 2.0 tdi octy I had it checked it's got gass in but not shore of how much it should have ?

And should you check pressure when the engine is running or not?

Cheers kev.

That's what it said when VCDS logging.

Is there a way to read using the climatronics diagnostic?

5 bar on low and high engine off . 10 bar on high side engine running and 2 bar on low side engine running. 525 grams of refrigerator r134a.

Don't use vcds myself. Can you go into climatronic 08 then read measured values. ?

Well further to this I had it into a specialist this morning for a proper diagnosis after the pressure readings dropped to 0 again.

Not good news :(

Internal failure of the compressor. Probably seized inside. Recommend whoever replaces it for you carries out a flush of the ac circuit. If they don't then there's a chance it will seize soon after.

And they should replace the dryer at the same time too.

I'm asking this as when I bought my car, the AC never got cold, so I'm not sure of "normal" behaviour

An initial VCDS scan showed up

00229 - Refrigerant Pressure: Lower Limit Exceeded

VCDS showed 0bar of pressure, and so I first assumed that it was a leak somewhere.

I had it into the garage on Monday, and thought whilst there they can check for leaks, and regass if possible. They said the vacuum test came back OK, so gassed it up.

Yesterday morning at 7am I checked using VCDS and it showed Coolant Pressure at 2 Bar, with the engine and climatronic off.

At 5.30 I checked yesterday I checked, and it was at 3.5 bar, with the engine running, and climatronic set to 22.

If I set the climatronic to LOW, I got cool, but not cold air coming out of the vents.

Ambient air temp was only 8c, so does the car realise this, and try to bring the interior up to a minimum temp, the same as it would do if I set it to 22, or should it always give icy cold air when set to LOW, regardless of outside temp?

VCDS now shows no faults on the air con, and the compressor shut off code was 0.

Hi softscoop,

Sorry to hear about your problem - I'm in the same boat as you :-(  My pd170 vRS Octy air con isn't working either.  I've scanned it and have near-enough identical results to what you show in your logs.  I've read through this thread and got as far as when you were told by a specialist that you needed a new compressor.  I was wondering if you'd had the new compressor fitted? And whether it was successful?  If so, would you recommend the guys that did your work, and could you give me an idea of the costs involved in the repair?  The more detail the better if poss! I'm really wanting to sort my a/c out, but the more I read, the more cautious I am!

Many thanks,

Nope no new compressor as we can't afford it at the minute.

Back to opening the windows for the time being.

The place that diagnosed the failed compressor quoted me around £500 to replace the compressor, this didn't include the cost of a new condenser or dryer either.

I will get mine done one day, but for now it will have to stay as it is.

Good luck in getting yours fixed, it certainly seems like a common problem, and one that VAG seem to deny exists.

Interesting thread. I've just had mine regassed two days ago and i ain't too amused with it tbh. He's passed the system ok no leaks new compressor fitted 2 years ago so I'm thinking about this pressure switch mentioned early in the discussion. It might just be worth a shot. But I'm not sure where it's located. Can someone tell me where it is.

How much did they charge to diagnose, scoop?

And do you know what they used, ie different to vcds?

I'm assuming it wasn't a Kwik fit / Halfords type place.

Cheers.

I've just done my condensor and compressor. I got a Nissens cond for £85 and a Nissens pump for £170, both new units, not recon of two separate sellers on ebay. By total bad luck, both the parts must have gone done about the same time and the day after a re-gas. It turns out I had the Delphi 5n0820803A pump on my car and the centre bolt was coming out, so I would have changed it anyway as I'm driving to France in 3 weeks from the north of Scotland. Changing the bits is fairly easy, just time consuming.

So how did you know the compressor and condensor were at fault? Or was it just a case of taking bits off and checking?

The condensor had a massive dent in it, I heard it happen on the road to alton towers, then as I went through the gate into the hotel car park I could hear the pumps squeaking on and off. That's when I noticed the bolt. Even with the pump off I still cannot get the bolt to tighten or loosen. I also invested in the condensor protector from my local vw dealer. I've been told my another member on here that it comes fitted now to the ones that TRP sell.

Would these parts be the same on the 1.9pd, do you know?

Does engine or body type etc, make any difference on the compressor spec / part number?

Cheers.

I have fitted a thin mesh to my grill as protection but a little worried it may tear away from my tie-wraps if I get a build up of snow against it.

Do you have a link or details for the VW protector?

Is it like the German one in this link? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-AUDI-SEAT-SKODA-GUARD-FOR-AIR-CONDENSER-STONE-GUARD-CLIPS-/261827232149?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item3cf61e8195

Thanks.

I looked up my car for the condensor then cross referenced the part numbers so I had a list of different make numbers and went from there. The pump I used the part number on it. It wouldn't surprise me if it is the same parts as they both have fitting in vw,Audi, seat and skoda not just specific to my car.

Thanks.

That's the part, there should be eight clips though.

The condensor is from, Selly service - Ebay

And the pump is from Ace parts - Ebay

Looks like the condensor is the same, forgot the mention you will need new seals from skoda. Can't get the look up to work for the pump, every time I try it closes my iPad. I would still get the number from the pump though.
