Lowering vRS, spacers needed?

Featured Replies

Just wondering if those of you who have fitted lowering springs have found the need to use wheel-spacers?

Sometimes when cars are lowered the wheels end up looking abit too tucked in under the arches. Spacers obviously push the wheels out abit improving the look/stance.

I'm tempted to get some Eibachs on ours at some point (plus RARB) but not keen on using spacers.

Edit: just noticed Sharkrider uses 20mm rear and 15mm front spacers...

I don't think they are needed, at least to me it doesn't look like it. I'd recommend you go for the H&R 35-40mm over the Eibachs solely for the better look.

I've been contemplating spacers for a while now, i think the wheels are quite far in and can do with like 10cm at least imo

I have Eibachs on mine and I don’t think there is any need for spacers.  I think the stance and the look is just right for the size of the car.

I have Eibach springs (-20mm) and Eibach 11mm spacers all round. Wouldn't go any wider than that. I can also confirm that the Eibach 11mm hubcentrics do fit all round even though the hub lip is roughly 14mm front and 15mm back. The spacers have a clever concave to clear this.

I don't think the spacers are needed, but they make a nice addition.

To me it's all relative to the lowering you are planning to have. Slammed = tires as near to the arch as possible. Moderate lowering = a bit wider

vice versa just looks silly.

You won't need spacers when lowering with Eibach springs but from a visual point it would look better.

I had H&R springs on my estate.

Looked good without them but 17mm spacers on the rear and 15mm on front looked perfect! Filled the arches nicely.

How much did you get the springs for (+fitting) and spacers?

The springs were 385 eur installed and spacers with longer bolts 165 eur total.

Wow that's shocking  :o

The springs themselves sell for ~150 euros (I got the H&R for even less than that iirc) plus whatever price the garage charges (or you DIY but it's not the simplest of jobs). Finland sounds extremely expensive for suspension work!

Not so bad if it included the required geometry set up afterwards

Well, the springs were 235e and the installation 150e. No geometry setup included. The car is an estate though, if that matters to the cost of the springs. Pretty standard price here I would say. Garage fees are generally very steep. A geometry check alone costs around 100e in most places..

I just made a quick search on ebay.co.uk for the springs (E10-79-006-10-22) and they seem to be selling as high as 200 pounds (UK locally). And in german ebay 170e ish. I can accept that the local dealer needs to charge more :)

Are H&R spings that much cheaper then?

120 gbp, from Germany yes.. ;) Independent repair shop. Skoda would have charged double at least :D

20 mm , hell yeah! ;)

Got a question regarding the bolts, do they come with the spacers? And does it come with an extended locking wheel nut bolt to stop thieves from stealing the wheel? Cos the stock one won't fit anymore i'm guessing as it's gunna be too short right?

The 20 mm ones bolt themselves (with their own bolts) to the hub, then the wheel simply bolts on.

the 15mm ones dont. BUT they have extended lenghth bolts that make it work (you need at least 7 turns from when it bites to tighten to be safe)

these do NOT have locking bolts , so my front s are not protected, BUT there is no crime where I live in that respect (locking doors? lol...) so there is no problem..... if people where yopu live steal wheels, I would suggest a couple of extended locking bolts too ;)

Usually the spacers don't come with longer bolts, they are purchased separate. Unless they are bolt-on versions like sharkriders 20mm.

You can get longer locking bolts as well.

^^^ yes, you will probably need to buy the longer bolts, I bought mine of members here (I put a wanted up) and got the bolts with 'em ;)

Stock bolts are M14x1.5 27mm in lenght I believe, so if you are putting 10mm spacers you should get +10mm longer bolts. It doens't need to be spot on, can be longer, there is space.

Okay thanks for that, i'm not looking to get anything bigger than 15-18mm so i'll look for extended locking bolts as well. Mine is a 1.2tsi monte so that means i would need M14x1.5 42-45mm?

Yes, correct. McGard makes long locking bolts.
