Silver101,

What charges or income comes in as income from 45 minutes of your employment time?

Dr Zoidberg,

can they go as far as taking data from your Satnav. Postcodes / Destinations.

It does not bother me personally, because if they are nosey, they are not as nosey as me.

  • That's just it, the customer is paying for it. I'd rather they spent the time more constructively instead of filming the underside for 20 mins!

  • Our BMW garage does it too. Next they'll wash your car 'for free' as it'll be included in the £100ph+ service cost!

  • That's not personal data in the scope of the data protection act, and if you think that a garage noting down that your car stereo was tuned to five live is an invasion of privacy then your priorities

DIY then, and do not darken their doors.

I do both thanks, as there are benefits to be had with each, the difference being I aren't being hood-winked into what is actually being done for the money.

I'm quite comfortable at paying £139 for 4.3 litres of oil, a £4 oil filter, 45 minutes of labour, a pretty glass showroom, free coffee and a now what I assume is a video recorder.

Is this a recent thing that you stopped using them?

That *would* be personal data and combined with your name and address, would definitely get them in trouble with the information commissioner.

That will have me in trouble as well then, i like a nosey at them when borrowing a Demonstrator / Salespersons car.

Odd how they get left without clearing.

I haven't stopped using them, I use my main Skoda dealer, local trusted indy and DIY.

My Superb is 4 years old, Skoda are known to make financial goodwill gestures on cars out of warranty but with full service history. I will ensure it is seen by the local dealer periodically up to it's 5th birthday.

I perform interim services myself at home.

Our Octavia Scout is 6 years old and covers low mileage. My local indy has VCDS so he is perfect for the G450 sensor, G235 sensor and rear bump stops it needed recently.

The Scout is serviced annually either by me or the main dealer depending on my available time on weekends.

Updates are not a 1 minute job, when I was doing some temporary work I ended up doing updates on new cars, in some cases taking 45 minutes to load ip

I guess it depends on the update.

Plugging the diagnostics into the OBDII takes a few seconds, if you work smart the updates can be done whilst the oil and filter are being swapped out.

My local dealer has a viewing window out over the service bays, my car was plugged in whilst up high on the ramps.

You would need to be recording the data, not just having a quick look.

One of my niggles, when the car is left at the dealers everything is turned off (Climatronic, radio, wipers etc.).

When I get back in the car and turn on the ignition the radio starts blasting out (on a different station to the one it was on), the fan is on, the wipers kick-in, the computer is scrolled off average MPG etc. and all noticed before I've had a chance to start the engine.

Not a huge issue, but it's the small things that you tend to notice...

A lot of them are done in dealerships at one stage with a roll along larger diagnostic unit with a shorter lead so car does have to sit on the floor but I agree you can do the body condition check and start topping up

Down to the mechanic then imo as there are posters etc instructing to leave all vehicle settings as they were unless testing a piece of interior equipment

In fairness though I'd rather the techie uses the blowers and wipers while on road test so he can see where he's going   :peek:

Me too, but then it's easy enough to turn them off.

I did two weeks work experience at a Ford dealer during 6th Form (almost 15 years ago!), we were always told to reverse cars into the parking spaces and ensure the steering was straight!

My fiat dealer dose which is a pentagon dealer and I get a vid everytime I take it in

Fair point, attention to detail I guess!

Your own personalised, dealership provided, toy-boy mechanic/presenter with benefits.

Can't wait for the Skoda variant !

No need to up-sell an oil and filter change, leave that to the dealers.

Roadtest - done from the car park to the ramps.

Diagnostics - 1 minute.

Updates - another minute, if there are any.

Visual checks - another minute, done whilst the oil is draining.

Reset service indicator -  same as the diagnostics.

Body condition report - 30 tick boxes.

Wash and vac - no thanks.

Exactly. Inspection service - do it with your eyes closed and one hand tied behind your back (And a digital camera in the other).

The difficult bit is removing the odd screw and piece from your car so that it can be used to service someone else's because the stores couldn't be arsed to order it.

'Up Selling',

or up their own or Financial Directors back side.

Fuel Injector Flush !

No,

i use the Prescribed fuel and were does a Fuel Flush appear in the Manufacturers Service Schedule / Guidelines

Engine Flush !,

No,

i pay you £13 a litre plus VAT for Full Synthetic at Services, they are 9,400 miles apart, and the oil is golden because i use the prescribed fuel.

I am away to pay you another £13 a litre plus VAT.

I don't know whether this just occurs on the high compression petrol engines, but my engine oil quickly goes black after a change, even when the exhaust pipe is a nice light grey colour inside. Presume its the effing EGR valve, being either in a state of total blockage or near blockage and upsetting the crankcase pressures. When are VW going to insert some sort of particle filter (Centrifugal ?) between the exhaust port and EGR ?

I like the sound of this :)

Yeah, but I don't pay £600+ for an inspection service.

I'd need a red carpet, fois gras and a magnum of moet chucked in, as well as a philm, to give me a nice warm feeling about that price.

£600! What cars cost this much? (excluding really silly performance cars)

What I would like to see is coverage of the full service, a head mounted camera worn by the guy actually working on my car showing everything, warts and all.

Much like this...

Can you chat the Tech up if he is fit?
