Power steering pump- Help me Obi Wan Briskoda, you're my only hope

Featured Replies

so a new PAS pump is required (as long as it's not the steering angle sensor, a fuse, a dodgy earth lead, the battery or a million other things). - simple..well..is it? I have searched the forums for advice on what part number is required and there are some very useful threads..but!!! my pump has no part no. sticker on it. Yes it has an illegible bar code on it but in a lot of the photos of 2nd hand pumps on eBay the pumps have a sticker on the very bottom of the pump with codes such as 6Q0 423 156 AB etc on..so, anyone have any ideas how I can guarantee I get the correct model for my car? Or will it be cheaper, easier and less stressful to join a gym to build up the upper body strength required to do 3 point turns sans PAS!!! :D  :notme:

Let's start with the basics.

What model, year and engine Fabia do you have?

thanks steveopc..vin no. 6Y823443398, the existing pump has green lid with vertical fluting for grip (read somewhere that indicates a TRW pump but don't want to disassemble car, again, to check if TRW is stamped on lid), one post I read said any pump will do, others add complications like part no's, some say it's plug and play, some say ECU recoding needed..i know this is yet another thread by someone who knows nowt about cars but any help appreciated..i like the car I have and want a couple more years out of it if possible..any help/advice greatly appreciated

cheers Gav

What symptoms are you having with the PAS?

You should be able to see TRW on the lid with a torch, it's on the top, not the sides, if so then the AB part will be fine and it's plug and play so no ECU recoding required.

thanks sepulchrave will try that though i guess it depends where the TRW is in relation to how the cap is sitting but will check again or take battery out

TMB - PAS appears to work whilst stationary, i.e. can be turned with little effort but once moving at low speed will tighten up when trying to go one way to the other..started like this but had no warning light, then one day it seemed fine, then the day after it went again and warning light on dash appeared and has remained on..took it to independent garage (local Skoda franchise said they couldn't read fault codes on cars older than 10 years due to software changes) who read fault codes 01290 reference voltage steering assist short with ground and 01317 control module in instrument cluster (J285) no communication - intermittent.

garage advised me to try 2nd hand pump hence the query on what type i need..

it is an old car and perhaps it just wants to go to car heaven..damn shame if so but nothing lasts for ever and reading the threads on here it could be an endless problem..so once i have identified the correct pump will try that then give up

the garage also suggested the problem i had with repeated steering rack failures (see my post of 22/1/14 Steering rack failures (3 in 3 years - same side) advice please) could be due to a faulty pump..though no leaks following the refurb of the 2nd replacement in Jan 14.

thanks for the replies, much appreciated

thanks TMB...so many possibilities and not sure how much the garage will be prepared to do to identify a possible faulty sensor, what with the voltage checking on the MVB etc, whatever that is..will research replacing the fuse in the battery lid..not sure if i can change that myself

and thanks sepulchrave as lid does have TRW stamped on it..

now all i have to do is figure out why the lid has CHF 11S on it, i have a bottle of it and it is green whereas the fluid in mine, filled by skoda garage, is red..d'oh!!! but that's another can of worms for another day..

i really appreciate you taking the time to try and help and give such clear advice..many thanks  :)  :)

now all i have to do is figure out why the lid has CHF 11S on it,

Stands for Central Hydraulic Fluid. 11S is the spec of the fluid. The stuff I have is green.

I used red ATF, it's fine, all hydraulic oil is very similar in that it's used for its incompressibility and not for its lubrication properties.

Edit: Forgot to say, the colour is just a dye, undyed hydraulic oil is clear. The colour is simply there to help differentiate a hydraulic leak from an engine oil leak.

As said above I'd get a scan from a local member who has VCDS, there is a list on briskoda with names of VCDS owners.................get the car scanned for fault codes......what the Skoda franchise stated is utter BS!!!!...................It sounds like the PAS sensor is gone!

Jack up the drivers side & look at the where the steering rack & the column meet, just visible from the drivers side wheel arch, you should see the steering angle sensor, if it has a black plastic cap about 3cm x 6cm? ish then old type, if smaller metal gold coloured cap then new type has been fitted.
