350 miles to a Full tank?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a 2006 Ambiente 1.6 Petrol. I noticed on the dashboard that my car did 350 miles to a full tank. When I full tank the car the dashboard says 440 miles remaining.

Does 350 miles sound ok for mostly city/urban driving in this weather? I do say I drive economically as I'm always in 4th gear when doing 30mph on a level road and my tyre pressures are ok.

YES

Ok so when the dashboard computer says 440 miles remaining that means 440 miles of motorway mileage remaining?

No, it means 440 miles remaining based on your last recorded overall mpg on the computer. ie it is predicting 440 miles at 36mpg from your 12 gallon tank.

I have a 1.6 and that's roughly what I'm getting too.

Just been out in mine and I'm averaging around 39mpg without trying so yours sounds about right.

thats better than my diesel out of a tank!

What you getting from your diesel? What engine?

lucky to get 350 on a PD170, always indicating 32MPG sometimes more, sometimes less, but on average.....

You must be driving constantly in town?

When I fill up my 1.9 DSG, it usually estimates around 620 miles.

Thought my little 1.6 petrol was pretty poor compared to a diesel. I get somewhere around 370 to a tank but my driving is mainly a roads and motorway (advantages of living outside the city)

Nope, country roads and a minor A road, some traffic, but not much town driving really.

Whitep, doing the same kinda roads in my 1.9pd with a stage 1 and 200kg of weight in the back I get around 500miles with 1/4 left in the tank.........I think yours needs looking at! Constant dpf regen maybe?

What do you all mean by "to a tank"?  Until the car stops with a dry tank?  Until you can put in 2 litres? 3? 4? 5? 10?.  How full was the tank when you started?  Absolutely to the brim?  Until the pump first cut out?  Filled both times at the same pump?

Over a 'tank full' there are too many variables to quote an accurate mpg figure, or are you believing the mpg readout?  An accurate check over almost 20K miles shows the Multi-dot readout in my car to be almost 5% optimistic with a true average just over 43mpg not 45.1 as shown.  Car is a 2012 CR170 DSG.  When I fill up the display usually shows the range as somewhere between 540 and 600 miles.

Could be but the car has had a lot of work done recently. New Clutch DMF, New DPF because of a crank shaft sensor faliure causing it to block, new cam and followers. I do actually have another new G450 sensor to try, because for the money its worth a go. I am on the verge saying sod it and having a DPF mod with the old DPF case and a stage 1 to see if that helps.

My old 1.9non PD used to do over 600 miles on the same roads. One time it did 720!!!

To a Tank I mean brimming, totally full, clicking off.

But when do you re-fill the tank?  When the car stops with a dry tank?  Until you can put in 2 litres? 3? 4? 5? 10?.   Makes a difference to the range achieved.  With my car a coupe of litres difference changes the perceived range by 20 miles.

Doesn't matter when I top mine up it always shows a range of 340 miles, then when I start driving it will go up to around 390.

Not drove a full tank yet but I filled my 50 litre octavia vrs estate up and it says my range is 320 miles. And average 29.5mpg that's purely town driving and country roads.

Dear God, :x who cares, in the nicest possibly manner.

Yes you are correct, but I cant believe anyone would be so anal about MPG in a vrs.

Mines is 2007 petrol remapped, I get 27 around town, sometimes 35 on the motorway and about 29 if I boot it everywhere. I'll get anywhere between 300 - 360 miles on a tank.

of course these are rough figures. But we really are splitting hairs aren't we. It doesn't really make that much of a difference does it, you still have to fill it up when it needs it and if you are that concerned about buying a car with decent MPG you wouldn't have bought a vrs.

Then I should be getting 440 miles instead of 350 miles right. I believe I have a 11 gallon tank.

But yours is neither diesel or a vrs so will have completely different fuel usage. I have the same engine as yours but mines an elegance. The fuel consumption you are getting is about right and about the same as I get. Thing with mpg is there are so many variables no two cars with get the same.

Just pointing out that quoting mpg figures and 'miles to a tank' with an inaccurate measurement method yields inaccurate results.

I bought a vRS CR DSG and I am happy with an average (over 20K miles) of 43mpg.  Much better than my previous 2-litre petrol that averaged 33mpg over 70K miles; and the vRS is faster.

Then I should be getting 440 miles instead of 350 miles right. I believe I have a 11 gallon tank.

I have a 12 gallon (55l) tank in my 2009 FL model. The range is based upon the last stored reading in memory  one for mpg. I got 57mpg (indicated) the last couple of long trips. So my predicted range when I fill up is ~680. Just drove a bit slower largely due to 50 mph motorway restrictions.

Then I should be getting 440 miles instead of 350 miles right. I believe I have a 11 gallon tank.

No.  The computer is make an estimate rather than an absolute statement.

The fuel usage is estimated off the fuel flow through the injectors and isn't an exact measurement.

When you fill up the computer has no idea what the ensuing traffic conditions, weather conditions & driving style will be like so the DTE can vary upwards & downwards.

When I filled up last week the DTE said 980km (~500 miles) because I'd just come off the motorway and I'd averaged 5.6L/100km for the trip.  That's near impossible over a full tank (55L) of mixed driving - generally I get about 700km  before the "Refuel Now" light comes on & a 52L fill gives me about 800km.

I think the most important thing is that the DTE estimate and the fuel gauge is accurate when the fuel is at the lower levels so that you don't run dry in the middle of nowhere.
