Black trim treatment - using tyre gel ok?

Featured Replies

Looking for something to treat the black trim bits on the vRS but as we have a scout on order also I'm going to need to something good for these bits.

I have yet used anything on the vRS - thinking scuttle, grilles, underside of rear bumper, wing mirror bases etc, but on the wife's CRV I've actually used Meguires endurance tire gel and seems to give a good lasting finish. I used to use a silicone spray like armourall on tyres and trim on my old cars, hence giving this a go - any issues or thoughts on this?

I've read gtech C4 is good also.

What I've read, "black wow" is the best imo, just costs a bomb.

I have AG bumper and trim gel and auto finesse - revive. Both work great and are cheap enough.

If you are coming up to Tor Garage on April 10th, remind me to bring some of my "solution finish" - It is seriously good "black bits" restorer.

Simoniz 'Back to Black Tyre & Bumper Gel'.  £6.

Which is not Black but a white / clear gel works and lasts. Good for all shades of Plastics.

Auto Finesse Revive

Autobrite Tyre & Trim is very good, lasts about 2 months on a daily driver.

I used gtechniq c4 on my Passat and it kept the trim black for a year before I sold it... On the vrs I use 303 aerospace protectant in the hope it will keep the black plastics black

of all the brands  I have tried, I find simoniz back to black the better one

We used to recommend that to customers years ago when I was in the car trade,it didn't last as long as some of its rivals products ,but it was quick, effective and left a quality finish with minimal effort.

Smooth peanut butter.

I'm just using meguires endurance tire gel as I have quite a bit left, it seems to work ok.

If you want something a little more permanent then try this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Forever-Black-Bumper-Cleaner-Reconditioner/dp/B001MPY436

I got recommended it a while ago on one of the Golf forums, It dyes the plastic black rather than just coating it. It can be a bit tricky to apply but if done right it will last more than a year and theirs plenty of product to do more than one car.

Poorboys trim gel. A little goes a long long way and you don't get the flicking off like you get will some tyre gels

Thanks for the suggestions all, hoping its on going nurshiment more than restoring. I like the poor boys glaze and pastes so might look at this further but also might give the tyre gel a go as I've got the applicator thingy for it.

Thanks Jason, Will try and get over but just remembered car is in for first service on Thursday, so may have to make some time up in the office depending if there's much messing about either end of the day at Murrys - will drop you a pm to let you in the week if I can make it.

My 10 month old has had some AG bumper care as I had a bottle. It gives a shine that lasts OK but doesn't blacken.  I have also used some wet look tyre dressing aerosol on the black plastic bits as I had some to finish up. It seems to give a surprisingly long lasting shine, halfords own brand iirc.  Since, to my eyes, some of the trim (rear bumper and front honeycomb lower grill) seem sightly grey from new when compared to the upper grill I fancy something that blackens as well as nourishes.  Tried simoniz in the past and found it didn't blacken.  Had some other brand that blackens well but couldn't find it for sale recently when I finished my old bottle (forget what it was now).  After doing a google a bought some kiwi black shoes polish, the liquid type, over the weekend. I'll try it tentatively.... Mud flaps first I think.

Peanut butter works well used to use it on my astra. Takes an hr or so for the smell to wear off but lasts longer than any other product I've tried.

I used the kiwi liquid shoe polish 'shine and protect' the other day, it looks great!  time will tel if it lasts but since its not costly and took seconds to dab on a cloth and wipe over the plastic bits of trim, I will redo it regularly anyway.

I have used the AG and simoniz but found sonax xtreme plastic restorer gel to blacken slightly unless there really grey and last s a good few months before stops beading and need reapply ing

I use Autobrite Hellsjhine Abyss Sealant

Makes plastic look new again

Jason - how are you finding the Solution Finish lasts?  I was toying up between that and C4 for the Civic but went for C4 in the end on the recommendation of Chris...   Happy so far but I seem to recall that the SOlution Finish is cheaper.
