Number plate light issue

Featured Replies

Right, no matter what bulbs I put in. Be it standard filament festoons, or can leds, or expensive led replacement units, my number plate lights come on for a few seconds, then go out...........

Really ****ing me off and is a guaranteed MOT fail.

Any ideas guys?

Fitting LED's has been known to confuse the system which still struggles even when the LED's are removed.

Stick in factory standard filament festoons and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes.

This supposedly resets the system.

My last set of LEDs did this after 3 years. I replaced them with another set of CANBUS friendly LEDs and lo and behold the problem went away.

I had disconnected the battery recently and I can't remember whether or not the problem had first occurred before I did.

Ok guys, will try both points and see what happens

Is there any chance these LEDs with the built in resistors may have scuppered my BCM? I wish you could completely disable cold bulb monitoring....

Pass but mine is definitely OK with a new set of bulbs (although I have a pre-FL model that doesn't have a BCM that does everything).

So LEDs don't cause control module faults on pfl?

No idea but in my case it doesn't seem to have done.

The only modification I'm aware of that can fry BCM's is CANBUS-friendly HID kits.

Ok guys. So a battery reset, install the LEDs, and delete any faults should do it?

I'd leave out the LED's to see if you can get the lights working as they should first. Once the bulbs stay on for more than few seconds you can go back to trying the LED's..?

Done all of the above... Lights come on for 3 seconds. Then go off and bulb out light comes on.................. Nightmare

Not good - is that with a regular single filament lamp fitted?

Have a look and see if you can see some rust around the actual hole where the number plate cluster goes in....the paint might be coming apart and you wont get a solid/decent connection.....mine is a 2011 and I found the paint was coming apart and now waiting for Skoda to come back to me whether they will sort it under warranty

Sounds like you got a short somewhere, is there any damp around the light have you got a test metre to see what vaults you are getting....

John - yeah mate, attempted the fix discussed above with filament, then led, then replacement led units.

Gatsbys - there is a little surface rust, but the earth and power are wired connections, do you mean there may be surface corrosion on the earth for the number plate lights?

Kidology - the issue I've got mate, is the lights work absolutely perfect, for a few seconds, then go off together, just like when it picks up an led without a resistor.
