Fog at Beachy Head yesterday

Featured Replies

Had weird rolling fog drift in over Exmouth yesterday afternoon. Very eerie.

those first two are excellent

I was there too!!  :sun:

And from your first photo, you were probably at the same place I was at around the same time.  Canny eh!

I was actually there about 30 minutes earlier, but was camera less so made a mad dash.  When I first got there Belle Tout was only just coming out of the mist.  Awesome and eerie at the same time  B)

I bunged my pics in the photography thread.

I noticed (and heard) a V6 TDi Superb driving away from the car park and remember thinking how rare a car it was!!

Many thanks.

I've a pathological fear of heights, so it was definitely "heart in mouth" time when taking the shot of the cliffs and lighthouse.

Very nice shots of an inversion. Personal favourite is the sunset above the clouds.

Stunning shots, we did something similar a long time ago at Rye and waiting for the sunset to come up.

Fantastic photographs

I would be very proud if I had taken them!!

Awesome work.

:rain:  You wouldn't see the sunset Chris with all the rain you've had  :rain:

Second one is awesome, everything's right for me, love the composition and the contrasting lighthouse and green grass compared to the mist..

Great shot.

5th reminded me of this daft-punk-get-lucky-snl.jpg

It's rained at night Andy apart from some drizzle one day last week

Largely sunny and warm since Sunday with cloudy interludes

There has been some really weird episodes of fog recently on the south Coast. kinda like eerie fog that comes in with the tide that hangs really low in the air.

Spectacular.

Inversion layer, with a vengeance ?

Lots and lots of  trapped colder than average cold air meeting a warmer than average sea spray ?

When the UK was fully industrialised you used to get stuff like this on a regular basis. Hence the lighthouses !

Only place I've seen sea fog like that recently is in Finistere,  France. There, in summer (!), the sea fog will roll inland, sometimes 3 or 4 miles, so that people on the coast will be driving around with headlights on at 11 0'clock in the morning and further inland it will be a brilliant sunny day. And by 2 o'clock in the afternoon the sun has burnt away most of the fog.

I'm sure its all part of  the weather pattern we've been experiencing over the last few months. There seems to be an excess of cold air in the upper atmosphere (Enlarging Polar Vortex ?) and warmer sea temperatures are reaching further north (More than average melting ice at the poles ?)which  perhaps explains the larger than normal loops in the jetsream. Huge depressions (Rising warm air) which can  stretch from Iceland to Gibraltar are being generated. The foggy weather which is the bit you get in between succeeding depressions as they are swept eastwards by the jetsream and the corrolis effect. Presumably, the inversion effect will be at its worst when the trailing edge of the cold air of an anticyclone  is trapped under the leading edge of a rapidly oncoming wedge of warm air formed in a cyclone.
