EPC light comes on and a major repair follows

Featured Replies

Skoda Yeti 1,2 l with 22,000 miles , always garaged. Registration date 7/5/10. We love this car but the following spoiled the romance.
Following a service by Skoda dealer Allam Motor Services in Epsom on 17/11/14, the EPC light came on and the car lost power. Limping home, I noticed that the cable to one of the sparkplugs felt loose and having pressed it on, I thought I had remedied the situation. The EPC light came on again on 7/4 and the car was brought in to a local VW specialist RD Garage Services who identified it as a turbobooster actuator washer problem. I then remembered that a turbowasher was replaced by the local Skoda dealer under warranty early on in the life of the car. It would seem that was a structural issue then. It made a noticeable difference in driving comfort as the turbocharger kicked in more gradually.

Regrettably this did not solve the problem as the EPC light came on again on 12/4. The car returned for repair to RD Garage Services today 14 april. The problem was identified as more substantial: the servo actuating the booster was intermittendly not receiving a signal. As the servo is an integral part of the turbo booster, the whole turbo would need to be replaced. Total cost including parts (£700 for the turbo, oil, labor, VAT) £1,300. You will understand that I was shocked. I decided to call Skoda before going ahead with the repairs.
I called Skoda Services on 033300375041 speaking to a friendly lady who explained that because of the age of the car it was highly unlikely that Skoda would make a financial contribution. However the first step would be to bring the car in to an official Skoda Dealer. As my experience with the local Skoda dealer was not good (they failed to identify a problem with the heater sensors amongst other things),  the probability of not getting financial support and needing a reliable car soonest, I decided with regret to authorise the repair.

This is very significant cost for a car that is so  little used. We have three friends who bought Skoda on our recommendation (2 Yeti's, one Roomster). I understand that Skoda would have needed to check the issue for itself but by rejecting effectively out of hand financial support, this was not encouraged. I am quite disappointed. I hope they will retrospectively be able to help but I do not hold my breath. I wonder if anyone else has experienced the same issue.  Leonard

Are the high tension leads clear of the exhaust (turbo) particularly nr3?

Why did you not return to Allams?  There are many satisfied customers on here.

Fred

You have refused to let a Skoda dealer look at it, therefore I'm not at all surprised that Skoda have refused to pay anything.

The OP implies that the 'EPC light came on' after the Yeti was serviced by Allams. Surely, if that was the case then one would, in the first instance contact Allams?

Perhaps, it was more that the last service happened to be carried out by Allams and at some time/mileage in the future (and completely unrelated to the Allams service) the EPC light came on.

As Fred said, there are many satisfied Allams customers round here including me (with three Yetis supplied and serviced by them - and they are a long way from being my closest dealer) and it would be a shame (and wrong) to imply that they were at fault when they were not.
