wax, bare paint or over sealant

Featured Replies

Car is 10 months old corrida red, and had been sealed with AG EGP when new and twice since.  The car is garaged and lowish mileage so I find the EGP lasts 4 to 5 months before beading starts to look poor and reapply.

However, in readiness for its 1 St birthday treat I just ordered some poorboys natty paste wax, from my limited research a hard carnauba wax like this should look great on red and last very well.  I assume I ought to remove any remaining sealant before waxing?

Is the correct sequence

1. 2BM wash (I don't have a pressure washer)

2. Sealant removal with IPA

3. Tar spot removal

4. De- iron

5. Rinse

6. Wax

No plan to clay or polish yet, paint is good enough for me for another year or 2 I think/hope

Another couple of questions

Step 2. How?  My guess would be IPA in a by and sprayer (watered down?) Spray over car, rinse off.

Step 3. I'm probably going to get laughed at here, but do I really need a De tar product?  I've always used a little dab of white spirit on a cloth to remove tar spots. Its been fine as far as I've noticed.  But, my previous cars were older and I know paint has changed to water based, if white spirit is now really bad I'll buy something else.

If it's 10 months old and only protected by AGEGP it will need deterring and claying

You will be surprised what's stuck to the paint

Re: IPA...dilute 50:50 and spray and wipe the panels after you have dried the car

Claying will remove most of it, the IPA will remove the rest

Go to Halfords and buy a Farecla Clay mitt..they are really good

Use with soapy water, you can feel it getting smoother

Then do a light polish to correct any marring that the claying may have inflicted, then apply the IPA or Car Pro Eraser

Finally ..reseal or wax

White spirit is fine but it's better to use dedicated product, it's more effective and less oily in finish

Damn, I feared you would say that.  I'm keen to avoid the pink, washed out over polished look that too many old red cars have. Combing with a little laziness/busy with lots of other stuff and a fear of the unknown ( I've never clayed before)  and I was thinking I'd be OK to wax this year... Clay and polish next.

Grrr.

Thanks for the tip on the halfords mitt.  I eyed up the carbon collective exfoli-mitt on bears wax factory last night but passed on it... Still spent nearly 60 quid on bits ( although I should have enough to protect the car for many years now).

So with clay is the order.

1. 2BM Wash

2. Clay

3.de tar

4.  De iron

5. Wash again, rinse and dry

6. De seal

7. Wax

That's going to take a while with a car the size of the octy.

Tar & iron before claying. Other stages can be done like polishing after clay. Not sure what you mean by de-seal

I would clay after you have detarred and de ironed

This will ensure that you are not dragging larger particles over the paint

Wax after sealer...leave it a couple hours first

By De seal i meant using IPA to remove any remaining previous sealant. Ah, I though De tar and De iron fist, but read Chris's first post to suggest the other.

So

Wash

De tar

De iron

Clay (which will remove most of any remaining sealant)

Light polish ( I bought poorboys ssr1 yesterday, assume this will be ideal)

IPA to remove any last sealant and any polish residue/solvents

Then...

Wax after sealant? I'd have done wax, and then the AG EGP, but you recommend the other way around?

I missed some steps again I think.

Wash,

Tar,

Iron,

Clay,

Wash ?

Polish

IPA

Rinse and dry?

Wax (or seal and wax)

That looks good, sealant always before a wax, not the other way around.

AG EGP is not a great product, but better than nothing. What waxes/sealants do you have?

Wash,

Tar,

Iron,

Clay,

Polish

IPA

Rinse and dry?

Wax (or seal and wax)

Above is ok, my routine would be to wash after the iron & leave the car wet & then clay, wash again, dry, polish & then add your LSP of choice

I like the AG stuff but I have very limited detailing experience.  Used SRP on a red corsa I had years ago and despite not using any other product it looked fabulous.

Right now I have poorboys ssr1 on order, and some T cut which I'd only use on major flaws. I've lots of EGP and love it, applied to the whole car in 5 to 10 mins, car put away in the garage then buffed the next day in 20 to 30 mins, nice shine, great beading and for me it lasts 4 to 5 months.  I've natty wax on order, a litre of IPA couple of bottles of ceramic wheel sealant and that's it other than shampoo.

To be fair SRP is a pretty good all in one product. I've got a big bottle that gets used all around the house too (brings up manky PVCu windows a treat!)

There are better individual more dedicated products around though. It appears everyone has sorted you out on how to get the job done so there isn't much to add
