Flashing coil light on dash

Featured Replies

Hi,

I did a search on google and found this forum so with some luck, someone might be able to help. I have a Skoda Octiviia TDi, and the pre heater coil now starts to flash continously after the ignition has been switched on for around 2 min.

Now after a looking on here, I spotted that this actually means that the brake lights are out, so I have checked the bulbs and the fuse (13) and they are both OK, so has anyone got any idea what else I should be checking before getting the car to a Skoda dealer?

not working, I managed to wedge the brake pedal on, and no brake lights are on

May be the switch which connects the brake pedal to the brake circuit.

Hmmm, I will have to check it in the garage tonight with a multimeter, now I just have to get the thing home :(

First guess would be that the brake light switch is knackered - it's at the top of the brake pedal. I think they cost about 10 pounds. However, I think that when these fail, the lights either jam on or never come on. I'm not sure you'd get a warning if the switch wasn't working at all - I don't see how the computer would know you were braking if the switch was broken, so how could it then warn you?

It could be the bulb-warning control unit. I had a problem in my 1999 Audi A3 where the high-level brake light bulb stopped working (the other brake lights worked fine). Turns out it was a loose connection in the bulb checking unit. I paid a local vw/audi place to find this out. They said the unit was up under the dash by the steering wheel.

My A3 had never told me when a bulb failed, and this loose connection explained why. Maybe you could try disconnecting a headlight bulb and then turn lights on and see if you get any kind of warning. I tested my A3 after my problem was fixed by disconnection the rear light cluster, and when I pressed the brake pedal the dash lit up to tell me a bulb had failed.

I spent ages taking the boot trim off and checking the bulbs, wiring, etc. I even checked the electrical connectors in the passenger luggage space (next to nearside wheel arch) and in the passenger footwell (A-pillar) before I gave up and let the Audi/vw place do it.

Again though, you ARE getting a warning, so can it be the checking unit? I'm not convincing myself that I'm being helpful to you here....

My coil light did the same thing, and it was a fualty brake light switch, just above the pedals.

Sounds like you have the same problem.

Its a brake light swtich for sure. Make sure you get a modified purple one to replace it.

Hmm. I think Jason had it on his car at the TSR RR day and gave a meaning to its significance, but don't recall it being a brake-light switch

Is this a DIY job or does it need doing by a dealer?

It is DIY'able but you have to be very carefull when fitting the new switch, they do break quite easily if not fitted correctly.

The coil indicator flashed the first really cold day after I've installed the KCR Powerbox. Removed it and resetted the ECU. Readout stated a problem with the p
