Gracenote album art update?

Featured Replies

Anyone know if the gracenote database gets updated with the satnav maps update , or is there another update method?

Even Skoda don't know, but it isn't with the maps.

My guess it comes with the firmware.

Maybe firmware - I thought the 0390 upgrade meant it was picking art up via Bluetooth but it's definitely not on mine anyway, but the maybe because a few more albums are being recognised now but i think this is maybe still a year out of date

Just checked Andy - don't think it is with firmware.

This was system info soon after i got the car...

Device part number: 5E0035020C

Hardware: H43
Software: 0360
Navigation database: V03959800MC0086 ECE 2014/2015
"Gracenote" database: = 10 CRC = 964 / Revision 5989 (build 1) of the eCDDB database[EU][Little Endian].
Media codec: N/A

I need to get big SD card to do satnav update but as you say probably won't do Gracenote

Isn't it pretty lame that this update process isn't done via the phone or something?

I guess gracenotes is only really useful if you play CDs which dont contain complete metadata about each track, album art etc.

If you're playing via bluetooth or mp3s from SD/USB the data is already available.

Its definately not included in the map data.

But new CDs will never be discovered...

My guess is that it comes from the source. I now listen to the Radio via Tunein on my iPhone and I get presenter pictures etc. which I doubt would be on any database?

If the source has album art it overrides Gracenote

0370 is v10 of the Gracenotes as well, so it could be the latest version?

I've just had a dig through the sourcefiles for the 0202 firmware and can't see anything that relates to Gracenote.

And the ECE 2015/2016 maps for the Columbus don't contain any Gracenote update either ...........

Is this out now Andy, haven't looked yet on update site but literally update maps to 2015 on Thursday (doh!) oh well did download at work anyway. Got trip to Scotland coming up on Wednesday for a week should, sure roads will be ok on 2015 until I get back :-)

Skoda haven't released them yet, but VW have.

For the record, I have had a response to my query regarding Gracenote updates from the Brand team at Skoda UK.

At this point in time there is not a mechanism or method to update the Gracenote database. This doesn't mean that there won't be a method available in the future though.

They have submitted a request to the factory so that the reference to visit the Skoda website or ask a Skoda Service partner for updates is removed from the handbook for the Columbus.

Thanks for update Andy, only a minor thing but as the wife likes to keep up to date with current music its more and more likely i'll be seeing the bluetooth or HDD icon.

Don't worry, I am on the case with my inside contacts :) and at some point I believe an update will become available, and when I have my hands on it ..........

Was there ever an update on this?  I notice when playing songs via Spotify over bluetooth that sometimes I get the correct album art but not always... sometimes its a bluetooth icon or a random music genre image.

I'm curious to know how the album art on the Columbus works also.

I've used various programs to insert the correct album art & metadata into my music files - saved on SD card & put in car.

Only about 50% of the files show the correct album art, and the others seem to choose 1 of about 4 incorrect album images.
Doesn't really affect the music experience, as I'm driving, not watching the screen.... but it's one of those OCD things that just frustrates me, and I don't know how to solve it.

I assumed it was Gracenote incorrectly overriding the embedded metadata, but this doesn't make any sense.

On a side note, I wish they would update the Columbus interface a bit..... there's a lot of useless information on the screen, like the "time-scale" slider thing, which really isn't necessary.  Honestly, who wants to know that a song has 1:23 left to play?
Yet albums or artists with long names, don't display fully, because the available character space is limited.

Yep, I’d say the database and GUI were designed by electronic engineers who weren’t too fussed about the aesthetics of the display, but most of it is okay on the Columbus. The time slider is only useful for a one touch fast forward or rewind within the song, but I agree a lot of the artwork and category display of the songs are incorrect or overridden. As long as the filing categories are maintained for ease of selecting genres and artists it remains a small issue for the OCD among us. It might teach us to allow for some imperfections in our lives...
