How different are TD 2.0PD & TD CRI ?

Featured Replies

My 2008 2.0TDI PD being replaced soon, and there seem very few around in comparison

to 2.0 TDI CR equivalent.

What difference if any would I find in running costs, economy and performance ?.

Thanks for your insights !

I'd be curious about differences too between PD and CR engines..

I've had a 2.0 140 PD Octavia estate and now have a CR170 Yeti so can give a little insight.

The PD engine has loads more low down torque - and I miss that.

The CR has loads more upper rev range pull. You'll go from 50 to 80 without realising it. But you'll need to drop two gears to do so (as opposed to one in the PD despite have 30 less BHP).

Octavia did about 48 mpg the Yeti about 45 mpg. However, on the motorway the Octavia would hit 60+ without fail, the CR only just makes it towards 60 and goes over 60+ on a good day (and driven at 60-65 mph).

The CR is much quieter inside the cabin (I know it is a different car) and out.

If i think of anything else to add, or you want to know something specific, let me know and I'll add it. I'm not technical about engines though, but can give a user viewpoint.

I've had both a vRS estate PD and a vRS estate CR and would say that the main difference's were the CR is much smoother at all times and has a more linear power delivery. Whilst the PD did seem to produce its torque at lower revs and with a steeper curve, in anything less than smooth, dry conditions, it would often lead to more wheel spin or ESP intrusion.

The CR fuel economy was also a little better (average improved from roughly 43 to 46 mpg overall) and it seemed to have better motorway fuel economy (mid 50's mpg easily achievable whilst still 'pushing on', whereas the PD seemed to struggle to get into the 50's in similar conditions).

The only downside to the improved refinement of the CR engine was that it meant you could hear more of the road noise that plagues the Octavias and particularly the estates.

PD170 VRS Octy vs CR170 Superb mk2 , dyno was perhaps a little optimistic but the graphs speak volumes , you can see the spike in torque of the pd engine , (my favourite by far) but the smoother delivery of the CR

There are four lines. Which one is which car / engine?

Two lines for torque and two lines for hp .

Top figure on the rhs is the pd engine and bottom the cr , you can work out which line is which easily enough

The CR sounds less ''agricultural'' compared to the PD.
