And I should have added, it's the A15, not a racetrack.

I would not have called it big car syndrome; A CLS and a vRS are of similar size and probably you could easily of out gunned her.

I took your original post to be you were in a small car and the larger CLS was up your chuff etc.

Its more (IMO) a case of Brand snobs believing they have a right to push on before your Skoda or the other halves Sirion.

Had a funny version of big car syndrome today....
Man with 4x4 and trailer in opposite lane wanting to turn right across traffic into minor road. Sitting there shouting and waving his arms in disgust at everyone because nobody was doing an emergency stop from 40-50mph to let him through even though it wasn't his right of way. He didn't even have a queue of cars behind him.  Took a lot of self control to not just smile and wave at him!!

Agreed the A15 is very dangerous. I use the stretch between Sleaford and Lincoln most days and have seen plenty of near misses. While it is very frustrating being stuck at 30-40, the number of times someone has gone blasting past me and into the distance, I have then caught up and repassed them in the city. Most of the junctions onto and off the A15 are very dangerous too. The crossroads at metheringham heath for instance, I remember an occasion someone pulled out in front of me to turn right, saw how close I was and had to abort and go straight on. Matter of inches from a big shunt, luckily not been repeated since *touchwood*.

If you race past someone taking all the risks on the way into Lincoln you will only be sat a couple of cars in front of them while you cope with all the delays getting in there caused by the roadworks of Canwick Hell!

It is amazing how many times you just roll up behind them in the queue. I just sit there thinking how much more fuel they used than me just to sit a space or two further forward in the canwick gridlock

I'm not sure this scenario makes much sense tbh. If you were in third gear and gave it full beans for the overtake as soon as the traffic cleared how was the merc driver up your chuff during the maneuvre? Surely if your car is significantly faster and you were using all the performance available for the overtake (like you should be) and didn't delay then what's the issue? You would have been pulling away from the merc the whole time until you were back in on your side of the road and she caught up again.

Flick back slightly in surprise and Merc pulls back, immediately go again and Merc is already coming through as I am out. .

Not sure I understand this bit either. Sounds like you either didn't overtake as soon as the gap opened or backed-off the throttle part-way through the maneuvre before accelerating again?

The A41 frrom the Midlands up to Chester is mostly single carriageway and a favourite with truckers... very frustrating when as soon as the road ahead is clear, they immediately start to overtake each other... still, they crack on at 50mph mostly until we come up on a tractor through rural Srophshire and Cheshire. I think I read somewhere that the big 4X4 tractors like John Deere are now allowed a higher speed limit than before ... 40 or 45mph ? ... I believe they are capable of a safe 70mph according to a farmer friend... :)

In my experience, theres only stigma against skoda by uneducated people who try to be smart, but dont have a clue what theyre talking about.

I've had it a few times with a couple of lads at college. Theyve no idea what theyre talking about. One drives an old corsa and the other an old astra.

People who actually know about cars, dont have any stigma against them at all IME.

Would the statement still stand if you had just traded in an Audi or Mercedes or the like, I wonder?, rather than an ancient LR Discovery.

 

I find my Octy reasonable to drive after stepping out of the van, but not so after stepping out of the A4.

Non taken Tilt ... you make a good point, but the Disco was not an uncomfortable car as coil springs all round and large leather seats... it was a good one for an old one, and only traded in for financial (mpg) reasons due to my "wanderings" to foreign faraway lands (Berkshire)  in search of a new true love of late ... :)

 

I have also owned Vectra, Mondeo and a good few years ago a sweetheart of a BMW 318i automatic (E30) ... seats were quite firm if I remember.

 

Is there SUCH a huge difference in comfort between the Audi and the Octy  ... seats perhaps ? handling will obviously be superior to my standard Ambience ... never owned an Audi.

The Octy is actually the most comfortable car I have experienced over full width sleeping policemen and large speed calming humps ... more so even than the Disco which nearly straddled the humps which the Octy does not quite miss, and also better than the previous saloon cars I have owned.

Its all relevant to what youve had in the past or are used to.

Somebody whos owned Bentley continentals probably wont be that impressed with an cr170 octy, but somebody whos owned a peel p50 will find it fast and stable wont they.

I've often found it's more smaller, slightly pokey cars that are the worst for that sort of thing. maybe because the driver's come from something properly slow?

I'm guessing it was the use of the horn and main beam. Tailgating on an overtake I see regularly, as mentioned it's intimidation and the natural urge of the following driver to want to get back into the correct lane as quickly as possible. The horn and lights suggests something else happened here that we are not aware of.

 

If as the OP said, he pulled out as soon as the last oncoming car passed then there was no opportunity for her to get alongside and therefore I'm struggling to see what she had to object about.

 

Can we be sure that she wasn't simply venting her frustration towards the tractor driver at being held up rather than the OP?

 

Has the Merc driver tried to overtake the vRS unsuccessfully earlier in the journey?

I get wanting to overtake more than car at once when they're stuck behind something like an OAP in a Honda who's going at 40 in a 60, when some people aren't bothered about getting past. But trying to overtake a car waiting behind a tractor is stupid - how many people are content to spend the whole journey going at 20mph?

 

IME, it's not usually the size of the car behind, it's more what you're driving that seems to be the problem. My 330d, is usually left alone, yet when I jump in the MINI, you get hassled a lot more, and not just from 'big' cars. In contrast, my E30, which isn't 'fast' (170bhp, once, maybe?) gets left alone too, as does my parent's Focus, which is also slower than the MINI.

 

Here's a recent example I came across on the way home of 'big' car syndrome (103bhp of pure power!) with an Audi vs. an Kia Picanto. (Good on the VX driver too - and sorry about the music!)

Yes there is, but only if you're driving a Felicia Pickup that's three different colours and a bit rough around the edges.

 

Particularly funny when it's a 1.6 and the person with the stigma is driving a low powered modern shopping trolley. It's quite strange watching someone who can't keep up with you trying to overtake you anyway as you sail away into the distance.

Yeah, sorry - it took me a while to wind the window down too - in my haste to listen in I hit the rear window buttons first.

I dunno - I followed them both (I shoulda turned off ages ago, but the Audi was attracting my interest) after the traffic lights. The Audi speed off down the next road (a 40) and pulled away from me very quickly. The VX was trying to get them to pull over via use of his indicators. They then went onto a dual carriageway, after the Audi tried to sell him a dummy at a roundabout to lose him. I caught them up again during acceleration off the roundabout (until they sped off above 70). The VX pulled off at the first exit though, but it was a last minute thing, as if he'd realised the Audi wasn't going to stop (would you?!). The turning he took just goes to a dairy, but loops back towards the road they were on, so he went of his way to some extent to try and talk to the Audi. 

 

I followed the Audi a bit further, just out of interest, but nothing else happened. The route the Audi had taken (I'd been following for about 5 miles) to get the DC was really inefficient, so I'm guessing that it's not where he wanted to go...

 

I've got more of the video afterwards, but it's not that interesting. I guess all the before (more sitting in the middle of the road like a ****) will have been wiper by now
