I've had two Fabia VRS now, and with both of them the standard radio/cd player's been a bit tempremental.

For Example: I'll turn the volume dial one 'click' anti-clockwise, expecting the volume to decrease by one, but it decides to turn it up by three or four etc....

It doesn't always happen, and i'm not sure why it does.

Sometimes the volume changes without even touching the dial too. Not that often though. The other complaint occurs more regularly, maybe every other day.

Anyone else had this problem? It's not major, just a bit weird!

I have had it, Took it back to dealer & showed them fault, had the HU changed, Thought it might be due to the Dension connected to the cd changer socket.

BUT my 2nd unit is now doing it, but only the raise vol by 1 & jumps 3 :( cant be bothered now to take it back again.

BTW do youhave anything using the cd changer socket ?

No, its just the standard single cd on its own.

Thinking of just fitting my Kenwood KDC-M9021, never had any problems with that - ideal head unit in my opinion.

Can anyone recommend a good ICE installer in the S. Yorks or East Lancs area?

Change ur headunit under warranty. Had that problem in mine, plus a problem where it would stop playing in the middle of a track and read 'CD ERROR', even with a brand new CD. The new one I got is excellent.

Yeah, spoke to my local dealer (Simpson's of Colne. They've been fantastic in all correspondence), and he said he has no problems with this installation so long as it was performed by a reputable fitter. Looks like that's the solution.

IIRC correctly, it's a known design fault with the HU (manufactured by Grundig FYI). You can ask the dealer to change it, and you may have it replaced for one that will have a slightly stiffer kn0b (so to speak ) which won't do the jumping thing.

I've found it's just as effective to grasp the kn0b firmly between two fingers when making volume adjustments, rather than just stroking it with a finger. (jeez - this post keeps getting worse! ) This way it doesn't jump.

This volume nob problem is seen on many old headunits in the Audi cars too - I'm told it is due to the headunit doing something like counting the number of times the volume nob is used, and after a certain number of uses, it gets all confused and starts giving you a random volume of it's choice, instead of the simple "bit more"/"bit less" that you were probably aiming for.

On the Audi forum I used to frequent, most people go off and buy a new headunit, as no-one could be sure that a bad headunit could be repaired.

So you'll see the problem in units that have been used a lot, which kind of makes sense.

As mentioned in this article, the problem starts mainly in cold weather, but then things continue to get worse:

The 01A8h cell begins "to forget" the data when the volume control EEPROM resource is exhausted. It becomes apparent as the autoradio turns on with an absolutely casual volume level and the control process becomes unpredictable. At first the volume level malfunctions can be seen at low temperatures only and the operating becomes normal with the device heating. But the EEPROM molecular destruction process occurs with each volume **** turning, so in several weeks or months the problems will take place independently of the device temperature. The further usage of the fault system will cause the failure of cells nearby and the device can be completely out of operation.
