High mileage car with unclear service history. What would you change on the PD engine to be safe?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have bought another running 200k, but the engine sounded sweeter than some sub 100k PD engine cars I've heard.

The service history is there, but not as complete as I would like so I have contacted the dealer to see if they can print off what has been done, do you think I will be lucky and they will help me out?

In the last 10k a few things have been changed and are all with main dealer parts.

Cambelt

Waterpump

Glow plugs

Glow plug controller.

It will runs fine, the oil looks good, the coolant is nice and clean.  I am just wondering if there is anything else you would recommend I look at now so it is less likely to let me down.

I'm thinking drive belts, fuel filter maybe?  I dont know.

Thanks in advance.

Suspension bushes will be worth looking at, particularly if any are originals.

Suspension and brakes mainly. Other than that a damn good look around it making sure all the doors and windows work and the locks are behaving. No puddles on the sill rubbers after rain etc.

Could also have a look at the engine mounts, particularly the dogbone mount.

I'd give it a basic once over and run it for a while, just see what crops up.

As above.plus i would give a diagnostic check. Just incase theyre trying to hide anything. Bulbs can be take out to cover hidden problems

Also im sure you can check mot history online using dvla site. That way you can see what the history is like. Im always cautious going through a dealer as they can clock mileage.

Hope its a good motor tho

I bought a high miler and resulted in having to replace the cam shaft as the incorrect oil had been used since the previous owner had it. Clutch also was weak and was replaced.

i bought my car with 160k miles on it, no service history, had knee deep puddle in all foot wells, wouldn't run for more than 5 minutes... (broken load sensor wire - i crawled under the car at the dealers to check! and a dead battery)

First thing i did was change all the filters - oil, fuel, pollen, got cam belt changed (who knows when it was last changed!) seal up the doors and clean (rug dr) the whole interior! - drove 450 miles with the heater on max and the windows open to get the water out the foot wells! (long stint down the motorway/there n back)

I've put 10,000 miles on it already! managed to get 75mpg out of it tail gating lorries on the way at 60ish mph (find the foriegn lorries, they do 60mph!)

It was up for 1400 but i got it for 650 delivered

I've relocated and installed dual cigarette lighters, an arm rest and rear speakers in the parcel shelf and put a stero with bluetooth in it so I can talk hands free

Next job is to change the suspension as somethings clonking - probably the console bushes! and to put some decent seats - 250 miles on "classic" trim gives you lower back ache!

bought mine on 138k, as above have stated

also check:

wish bone bushes

gearbox mount bush

dog bone bush/ engine mount

maintaince/ clean:

Remove and clean EGR + MANIFOLD

strip all air box and pipes and clean

clean MAF with electrical contact cleaner

google "turbo vein/ actuator clean, Mr muscle"

wet/dry steam clean interior

check all fuses

check vcds lite, for fault codes

get battery checked

change gear box oil  - manufacturer says life (what is life??? 100k ?)

change brake fluid - uprated dot 4 super etc

change power steering fluid

clean all relay points ( battery top etc)

use diesel purge on injectors

check/ sort leaky boost pipes ( usually self tapped etc)

remove scuttle panel under windscreen wipers, and clean all the years worth of crud blocking the drain points resulting in leaks/ potential leaking/ corrosion.

remove wheel arch liners and scrap all years worth of crud out, stopping / minimise arch corrosion.

Try a tank full of shell/ bp V power diesel and add some FORTE injector cleaner

TBH i was disappointed not to see a sticky guide to cars with 100k- 200k mileage, with preventative maintenance, additional ideas, tips... this is common on other car forums. Here you need to search(search function not so great) like mad, and read everything including old posts, or you miss things like http://www.awesomegti.com/car/skoda/fabia1/42-draft-vw-shifter-bushing-sethttp://www.psituning.com/product.php?xProd=22748... Which im sure all our cars 100k+ would benifit from...

There are loads like these, and i still have not come across them all im sure, such a shame these things are not sticked :(

It seems there was another website/forum, that had a lot of these sort of things and guides, that older members had the benefit of using, sadly a wealth of resource has gone .. :(
