drivers side door stopped working :(

Featured Replies

So my drivers door has just packed in and stopped working. I got home, went inside to grab some stuff, came back out, put the key in the ignition (didn't turn) and the passenger window shut itself in a juttery motion. I then tried to shut the drivers side window to no luck, tried to open the passenger window with no luck either. I noticed the car thought a door was open (all were shut) but I double checked. After about 3-4 minutes the car decided that yes, all the doors were shut HOWEVER it doesn't recognise the drivers door as being opened ever.

Stuff that doens't work -

ALL controls on drivers door, wing mirrors, central locking on that door only, all windows from that control, lock/unlock button.

Stuff that does work -

central locking on other doors, air con, lights, (interior and exterior)

Can anyone point me in the right direction? :( Wondering if the central locking unit on the drivers door has popped in.

p.s....tried changing fuses already and had no luck!

It's quite a common fault. Check the wiring loom where it goes between the 'A' pillar and the door for a break, or where it clips onto the bottom of the motor. Hope that helps?

Sounds like a likely culprit so will check, what do you mean by "clips onto the bottom of the motor"? The central locking door control motor?

No the window motor it has a control unit on the bottom of it and water gets into the multi plug.

It is a plug pushed into a socket on the rear of the window control box, just below the motor.

To release the plug you need to pull up the retaining loop on the top of the plug. It comes half way easily but gets harder as you keep pulling because it also starts to lever the plug from the socket.

Take at look at both parts for corrosion around the pins/female parts.

Normally it is the lowest pin in the middle row which fails first as this is the 12 Volt supply. You may be lucky and find the pins intact and can clean things up. I had to replace the above mentioned pin on mine then everything worked correctly.

There are many photos in threads on the subject so do a search.

^ just pulled this part off and found some horrible wiring job. Someone had soldered a green/black wire through the male plug and onto the female plug. You were right, it's got a bit of corrosion in there.

Try and find someone that's breaking one, I sold the motor I had a few weeks ago. If you are looking at replacing it you need to get the exact part number.

Do you know if the window motor being dead would take out all the other electrics in the door including the central locking?

cheers.

I doubt the motor is gone it's usually the control box on the bottom of it and the loom attached.

oops, I meant the control box yes!

Yes it's probably a combination of corrosion on the plug and in the control box.

Thanks for all this   I have had the same problems and was about to order a new motor, will try these fixes first

Never spend that much before basic checks and explorations with this stuff. Often comes down to multiplug, broken wires and sticky lock mechs as outlined above. If you repair your multiplug or do really need to fit a replacement try and protect it against future water ingress. There is a post by me in the tech section.

great guide! I was thinking of doing something like this myself. The door had no real waterproof membrane to speak of, but also had no real moisture in it anyway. It's apparent that someone had been inside the door before as there was a bundle of brown wires cut and sealed at their ends, probably an aftermarket alarm or something I expect.

I've ordered a complete in-tact door loom and I want to replace the whole loom + reinforce the cables where they pass into the door to prevent them getting cut again. Can't find much info on where the loom connects inside/under the dashboard etc though  :notme:

There is a multi-plug and an earth connection behind the drivers side kick panel. Two screws removes the bonnet release handle and two screws at the bottom behind a small pop out cover. You will need a 10mm socket to fit the earth strap connection. Hope that helps?

I think the leading window regulator slider can also be a rubbing point so reinforce there if you can too.

Some people remove the membrane for a job (such as speaker upgrades) and don't bother putting one back on, apparently they didn't have problems with water...not sure how. Anyway I think they're still available on skodaparts.com. Glad you're getting there now.

Still available as I've just bought all 4 for mine and very reasonable price too.

So today I managed to get the window working by putting in a new window motor control circuit....except it works in reverse but that's not a big deal. The biggest problem I have is nothing else on the door works, no remote windows, no central locking, no power wing mirrors, nothing :( .

I haven't replaced the wiring loom as I bougth a golf mk4 thinking it woudl be the same/close enough to work, turns out it is pretty different. Does anyone know how difficult it would be to just fit a new door? seen one in the correct colour on ebay for £80. I'm guessing just a case of switching the locks over? Central locking would still work right?

Window motor part number has to be the same to work straight away, or it will need coding to the car.

problem I have is I can't find a mk1 octavia wiring loom for sale at a sensible price. This the part I need to replace.

Few on ebay for every door BUT the drivers door. With the door you'd have the same problem as the module would have to still be exact same number to talk to the ecu. Looking at the scarcity of looms I would suggest getting the door, breaking the parts out (loom and lock mech) get the module coded (probably someone on here near you can do it) and then selling the door shell, card and whatever switches you may have to recoup some cash?

Can't remember how much a new loom is, probably around 100? Fair bit more than that door I'd say.

Skodaparts.com have them £107.82 plus p+p. If all else fails. Skospares is another option they deal in second hand parts.
