3.6, but in which car? Or a V8?

Featured Replies

Its completely out of the ordinary for me to start day dreaming about by next car before I've sold the two on my driveway... NOT!!

So, having loved the space, versatility and of the Twindoor 4x4 that I've currently got for sale, my natural instinct was to start dreaming of a 3.6 Twindoor - especially as there's a well priced one on Trader (see other thread).

However, the one thing niggling at me (other than needing to shift two motors first!) is the fact that the Skoda's driver's seat is incredibly uncomfortable! I'd properly buggered my back having done a few long drives in it - probably just me as I'm not the sveltest of blokes, but I've tried every adjustment and still get shooting pains up my legs!

I've seen another thread on curing that issue by bending a bar in the seat - eek!-  but I also got to thinking that the rear 3/4 of the Skoda isn't the best shape either...

So, my mind starts drifting to a Passat CC 3.6... Same engine, slightly faster due to more power (300bhp vs 260bhp) and a nice shape - since I've owned the Legacy, I'm a sucker for frameless windows.

Also, the whole seat comfort thing made me think back fondly to a Volvo S80 4.4V8 I had a couple of years ago - interestingly, there's one with my perfect spec for sale just up the road from me.

Obviously, I will go and test drive all of these, plus probably an A8 W12 as well just cost its mad enough to work! However, I'm not doing that until at least one of the cars has shifted!

Anyone had experience of 2 or even three of these that are currently on my shortlist? Any views?

Also had a funny five minutes when I also considered a Merc R500 V8 - equally mad engine but with the luxury and space to go with it.

Thanks

Z

Wow - I like your thinking.....

Owning an R36 with 3.6 V6 now.... I'm looking for another for SWMBO actually....although estate would be good.

The Passat CC with full-fat 300bhp V6 is very tempting and very cheap too.

Yep, they are coming up not much more than a Superb V6, Sam, and they are a gorgeous shape!

How're you finding the seat comfort in the Passat? I know the seats in the CC are a bit different, but probably a decent marker...

Saw a W8 estate on Trader, if you want a bit of retro fun for your missus - getting a bit long in the tooth now though (the car, not your missus!!)

Really looking forward to the test drives! For pure seat comfort alone I'd pick the Volvo as I've enjoyed driving it in the past. However, although that engine sounds absolutely gorgeous, 1) the gearbox is god awful and 2) as its originally a boat engine, it does tend to overheat if you give it the full beans for too long  ;)

Also spotted a manual (my slight preference) S60R also with 300bhp - pity its in bright red!

The Yamaha engined V8 Volvo S80 is a well kept secret.....but the handling and ride (my opinion) are different to the Superb (although mine is uprated and lowered - I have no experience of the standard 3.6 estate). Comfort barge....

Try the 3.6 estate.....it looks better than the twin door (my opinion ;) ) and with a simple ecu tune will go like stink :)

The Passat R36 seats are one of the reasons i love the car....why i'm on my 2nd one too.

The electric +heated seats are great for adjustment, comfort and support

Having come from a 6.0 v8 to a 170 elegance superb I have to say I miss the rumble... However I dint miss the fuelling, taxing, insurance and servicing not to mention £700 plus vat per disk and £616 plus vat for a water pump!!!!

That's quite a change!

I have to agree that the width of the seats in the superb is a massive disappointment and I also get leg pain from the side of the seat digging into my leg. There are so many more comfortable seats out there it's such a shame.

Wile, yep, forgot the handling is god awful on the Volvo too - love the burble tho! I take your point about the estate, but with SWMBO getting a bigger SUV this year, I can porobably get away with something smaller - the CC is nosing ahead, me thinks..

M00k - gorgeous VXR! Always wanted one of those... hmmm, another for the list!

Chunk, I know, spoils an otherwise lovely package.]

Very nice indeed

I must admit I looked into the Monaro a couple of years back and was tempted;

but then digging deeper into running/servicing costs and issues that come up.... I walked away!

...they do sound absolutely amazing though!

I can second the amazing seats in the R36, my back is better after a drive than before it , and I see a back specialist regularly

....as long as you don't sit in a "sports car" too long of course!  :giggle:  ;)

Big     for the R36 seats...... passengers always comment on the comfort level.

I've always been fond of the CC and it's probably 3rd on my list come renewal time, behind the new Superb Estate and Hatch.

Blue/Sam, do you know if the R36 seats are the same as the ones in the Passat CC? They look the same to me in some photos, but wasn't sure?

If they are, the Passat CC has leaped even further ahead in the list!

I don't think they are the same; but similar.

There is an example on eBay (horrid interior colour) but shows same electric adjustment;

but differing stitching pattern and design....

In fact - 2 nice R36's on eBay at the moment

Aren't they effectively the same seat structure of the Superb albeit with different backs and squabs?

The shell certainly looks the same?

Now on my 6th Superb, suffer from degeneration of the spine which traps leg nerves sometimes. Seats are absolutely perfect for me. 5' 10 40" waist well rounded rear end I fit in the seats perfectly, no leg squeezing no back adjustment problems. Long trips no problem no aches or pains even when driving from Cornwall to Scotland with just a few stops for coffee. Possibly the mass production of the seats is the main problem. Seats can be obtained from outside firms made to measure but I have never used one as I don't keep a vehicle longer than 12-18 months. needless tro say nedxt vehicle will be a Superb a MkIII.

Do like the look of the R36s available at the moment. Unfortunately (and no disrespect to Sam or Blue!!) my dad's got a Passat and has had for years! Until he changes it, the closest I can get is a Passat CC, lol!

Sam, saw that one on fleabay, not as fussed about the seats, sure I'll get used to them in time, but can't stand the wood! Pretty certain I can get the seats professionally re-dyed back to black for a £2-300.

Liked the one below but no sat nav so would need to allow for that and still the dodgy seats and the wood!

This one looks quite nice too, but higher miles than I'd ideally like:

Also this one, but no sat nav...

BUT, I'm not meant to be looking yet as both cars are still on my driveway! Most keen to shift the Skoda now as I can always use the Scooby as a PX, so get all your 'Skoda-wannabe-owning' mates to look at it!  :D

Also, not sure about this, but I'm sure I read somewhere that the 2009 onwards CC 3.6 falls into a lower tax band, hence 'only' £280 rather than £485?

Anyone know?

  • Author

Also, any 3.6 owners on here got mega miles on the clock? The Passat CCs in my price range and with the spec I want are coming in around 70K+ miles - any issues to be aware of?

Hmmm.... unlikely; but interested to know if anyone can confirm?

Sorry I'm just cropping up on 49k miles on mine.... no issues to report.

Found this on Parkers for the Passat CC - looks like there's a change around end of May 2009 - quite a big change in terms of emmissions.

Unfortunately, the R36 (saloon or estate) is at 229g/km hence falls into higher bracket regardless...
