What do I do Gtb2260vk or not

Featured Replies

From my experience...

Large GTB2260 hybrid - so much boost lag, didn't like it for a daily driver... Was rather powerful but I wouldn't say smooth because it was that powerful.

GTB1756 - This was the best setup I could find, but over all looking at how much was spent went into the thousands... a lot extra work as well.

GT17/52 hybrid - cheap and cheerful, didn't cost much, direct fit, got a THS FMIC and made my own pipework.

Never got a chance to dyno the large GTB, but the GTB1756 remapped to 230bhp, the GT17/52 hybrid remapped to 220bhp, I wouldn't say they drove very different... Both a nice drive.

Oh and yes, GTB are more solid and reliable, one of them at 230bhp is fine when they can be pushed past that. A hybrid pushed to 220bhp isn't going to last as long (been two years mind and still going fine!)

Okay, going from the consensus here I will choose the gtb route as I much prefer to things once, I wouldn't want a turbo failing on me! A 1756 sounds the most justifiable as I am not chasing big figures and it comes in £250 cheaper than the 2260, or, is that £250 worth spending in case I ever want to go bigger...

"Go big or go home" ?

Could you point me out where I'm wrong on a quick shopping list for the upgrade: gtb turbo 1756/2260, airtec fmic, pd150 head bolts, oil feed/return (need to read up on these some more) and silicone/uprated boost pipes. What have I missed out, surely there's loads!

Your advice / guidance is much appreciated.

Exhaust downpipe or flange at least to weld on your current one

220-230 is the sweet spot in a Fabia.

Would that be a reliable figure with my 'little' shopping list above (and a fabooka remap)?

Interested to hear how they compared in daily driving i.e. did the smallest turbo come on boost earlier giving improved response say between 1500 - 2000 rpm ? I do a lot of miles in this rev range.

My 2260 is at 2 bar on stock injectors and drives really smoothly and pulls really hard all way to 5k. Slight lag at 2k rpm but not very noticeable. Suppose a lot is down to the mapping. Coskev is prob best to sumarise the differemce between gtbs as he has had 1756 and now 2260. Just be prepared to have plenty of spare cash for the conversion as all the little bits you may end up needed cost a lot. Well worth it though i laugh to myself every morning on way to work now! And i do 400 miles per week in mine.

Yeah a standard frame turbo will Deffo give the best low down response.

The GTB is a bigger series of turbos,so everything is bigger and as a consequence takes more pressure from the engine to get spinning,so more lag.

You can do a GTB 1756 conversion for well under £1000 if you or your m8's are competent on the spanners.

The main difference moving up to a GTB is power right through the rev range, but you do lose the PD'S low down response a bit.

£1000 for the turbo, oil return, down pipe etc? Sounds reasonable. Especially when the 2260 is about £1k from Xman on it's own.

with a cast manifold they are about £800 from xman are'nt they? 2.75" donwpipe from him is £150 (if i remember rightly) then oil return (best to get use long lump of oil resistant hose and the standard fittings then you can make it however long you need to) which is about £30 ish. So yes, about £1k is possible. I would then keep £100 to one side also for other bits and bats like oil, filter, clamps, new exhaust studs and nuts. Then obviously another £150 for mapping.......... So i would say £1250 more realistic. Talking about this makes me weep at how much mine actually cost......................... :'(

I think I was looking at the wrong one then.

I will have a research into oil returns now as I'm still not certain what I am looking for.

I think it is going to be worthwhile forking out that extra bit for the 2260 isn't it...

Sorry for bringing up price comparisons, why was your setup so expensive?

Replied in pm.mostly. i have tubular manifold which was 600 alone whcih is qhy mine was so expensive. Plus 500 turbo, 600 fmic kit, 1200 smf/clutch, 150 custom tip pipe. So 3k ish. Ouch.

I'll have words on Saturday with a mechanic friend of mine. Teetering over the 1756 and the 2260. I would like to keep costs down, and don't want to go over 220ponies as I don't want to go down the lsd route. Anything above 220 without an lsd I don't think would be any use (considering how much they spin in moist conditions as stock!).

I'm thinking x amount for the turbo, wondering wether to wait for a second hand air tec to pop up or splash £500 on a new one, boost pipes -£150??, full service, a remap and a couple of hundred to allow for bits and pieces. Hopefully somewhere well below £3k ish ... !! [emoji4]

I use mine to commute down to work each week then back to Manchester every weekend, and it drives lovely; I also plan on doing 5/6 track sessions including Nurburgring each year which is why i went 2260 (the ring has some bloody long wide straights!), plus i will be keeping it pretty much forever which i why i splashed so much on it - do not ever intend to sell/break it ever it will just be a little fun toy eventually. Sounds like you need a gtb1756, however if you take me up on my offer of coming out in mine sometime you may change your mind!

My 1756 off XMan was under £600,but was nearly two years ago.

If you don't want more than 220bhp don't go for the 2260,go for the 1756 IMO :)

Well I won't ever be attending any track days, I would buy a clio sport (something that is designed to go around corners!) to thrash around in if I did.

I am in a similar boat as you in the ownership plans, I will keep this car for as long as it lasts, hopefully a good few years! Then it will probably be time for a family wagon... [emoji52] Hence why I am considering modifying this one, as it will more than likely be the last one I ever tinker (mechanically) with. Yes I think the 1756 is the one to go for in my situation. I will definitely accept your invitation, just don't put your foot down all the way [emoji6] to simulate a slightly smaller turbo haha!

Yes I think anymore than 220 and it will become unusable plus I don't want to be putting fresh tyres on non stop, or start down the smf route either.

I have got three holidays coming up in the next two months so I will have to see what I can put aside! I won't be rushing into anything that's for sure.

Thanks for your honest opinion though.

Another quick question:

Would a Seat Sport IC give a 1756 enough air to breath and prevent heat soak efficiently enough? Or am I best forking out for the Airtec?

JRJG

Seat sport have been known to crack and fail even with remaps and a hybrid so I'd keep away personally.

That explains the extra three hundred pound price of the air tec then.

Thanks ! [emoji5]️
