K&N for a Fabia VRS 2005

Featured Replies

Slapped a K&N on every car I've ever owner, including the Fabia - never had any problems at all. Noticed more responsive acceleration and marginal increase in fuel economy every time.....

Never had a Green jobie so can't comment, only thing I can say is that after 5,000 miles not one problem with the K&N and it still looks as clean as the day it went in (PD160 fitted at the same time as well).

At the end of the day its not going to add 10bhp to your car, or knock seconds off your 0-60 time, but it will make your engine run smoother

That sounds quite nice!! Can you hear it with the bonnet down and window open? And what make is it?

(I had a K&N 57i on my Punto and that made nice noises when I lifted off etc.....)

Hope that video was on a private road. ;)

Are you sure about the 7 second 0-60 time? Not trying to question it, but I know that even remapped ones pushing 180hp/190hp struggle to break into the sub 7 seconds, especially in wet conditions. It'll be time for me to do some testing soon methinks. ;)

I must admit at a certain rev's it does have a rather nice 'rasping' noise

Now how does a sports air filter increase fuel economy when it's job is to allow more air to flow into the engine and therefore increase the combustion rate??

It's a diesel - fuelling is done by the ECU, not the airfilter.

On a petrol it does have that effect though

Now how does a sports air filter increase fuel economy when it's job is to allow more air to flow into the engine and therefore increase the combustion rate??

"1. How much of an increase in miles per gallon should I see from using a K&N air filter or intake kit (Fuel Injection Performance Kit

I got the 7seconds figure from the time on the video. ok it could be out slighly but watch it again and time how long it takes to hit 60.

Yes but John, think about it. More air goes into the engine with a sports filter. With more air, more fuel needs to be jetted in to combust.

Think logically here. Because I'm a bit puzzled with this whole 'increased fuel economy' issue.

VW-VRS, fuelling is done by the ECU with most modern petrol cars today, including the Fabia. Point is, like I already said, how??? How does a sports filter improve economy when in fact what it is doing is ALLOWING more air through, which means the ECU will realize this and will have to allow for more fuel to be fired in to match with the amount of air going in, and then combust.

It does not make sense to me :(

To be honest Mil, in my own non-mechanical type way of thinking, I'd say that no more fuel is is jetted into the engine its just that more of the existing fuel that does get jetted in gets used efficiently, hence a noticable differance in the amount of soot churned out the back end in the case of the VRS.

I'm not saying that a sports filter gives you 5-10mpg more or anything, just from my experience of fitting K&N on a varity of cars over the years and with my driving style they have led to a small increase in fuel economy and an increase in throtle responsiveness, and certainly dosen't lead to a decrease in mpg.

I'd say whether you see gains or not is a lot down to driving style and conditions.

Maybe one of the more technically minded folk on here would be able to give a more detailled insight into the exact effect sports filters have ???

I'm no auto-engineer but I do understand simple physics and it occurs to me that the volume of air sucked into any engine per unit time is determined mainly by the total cylinder displacement and the rpm. Not by air filter design. The power supplied by the engine to turn the wheels is equal to total power produced at a given rpm minus power lost to do other things (like running the aircon, lights etc, frictional losses in drive train). Power is also consumed in sucking air into the engine through the induction system. If you reduce the resistance of the induction system, by fitting a "high flow" low resistance filter, then more power is available at same rpm to drive the car than before. Economy is improved because you can back off the "throttle" and stay at the same speed. However "high flow" filters really come into their own at high rpm when induction resistance is of increasing importance. Thus at high rpm the engine will appear to rev better and the car go a bit faster (hence the reason they were developed for racing) but economy will fall as the engine becomes far less efficient at high rpm. Best ecomony is usually found at the rpm where highest torque occurs and this is usually at lower rpm.

To quote Monty Python.."That's my theory and what it is too "!

I got more mpg with a K&N 57i fitted in my Punto- for what its worth :p Less restriction, so when driving normally the engine doesnt have to work as hard getting air into the engine...??? (or am I talking bullsh*t...)

K&N replacement for me !!
