Witnessed a motorist dropping litter, caught on dash cam. Let it go?

Featured Replies

I am seriously thinking about 'shopping' more cigarette butt droppers now.

But on the other hand, Swindon Borough Council will probably do jack about it.

Received a response today from Durham Council...   Hi Thanks for that footage, have just PNC checked the vehicle it comes back to a car dealership in Newcastle. I will send them a formal warning t

No it doesn't , it's still the Police that need to police the roads not some self appointed ***** with his dashcam , I don't believe in vigilante justice, and thankfully neither do the Police

The 'self appointed ***** with his dash cam' (clearly me) is simply an extra pair of eyes and ears for the Police.

I'm not breaking into the guys home at night and torturing his pet cat!

Lets bring this into perspective, I reported someone for dropping a crisp packet, I am not a vigilante  :D

Vigilante, any person who takes the law into his or her own hands, as by avenging a crime, done violently and summarily, without recourse to lawful procedures.

The Police will still be policing the roads, just using evidence captured and provided by a member of the public.

A few points from me, keeping it civil.

You would speak to someone in the street if you saw them dropping litter (citing personal safety as a concern), yet you have an issue with me reporting someone for dropping litter after the event has happened. Had I had the ability to speak with the driver face-to-face that is what I would have done, but I'd have still ended up reporting them as I'd have no doubt got a mouthful of verbal for taking the time to 'educate' them.

I didn't get upset about it, please re-read the thread title. You'll also see that the council have done something about it, see page 1. If your attitude is that the council won't bother so don't report it then guess what, they aren't going to be able to do anything about it.

What is the difference between dropping a sofa in a lay-by and flicking a crisp packet out of the window?

Finally I have moved on, at about 40mph as it happens if you view the footage.

1) Why do you need to "keep it civil"? Was I not civil to you?

2) What makes you think that I have an issue with you reporting it? I merely said that "we both know the council will do nothing about it, so why bother". If the answer to that is "because it really ****es me off and they should do something about it" then fine. But i think we both know that they still won't do anything.

3) I think we both know the difference between a fly tipping a crisp packet and a sofa - the council may be interested in a sofa.

4) The tone of that reply (especially the opening line as noted in point 1) is not one of somebody who's moved on - even if you did at the time at 40 mph. If you'd moved on, you wouldn't feel the need to keep "defending" your actions and you wouldn't still be replying to posts like mine 9 days later.

I have moved on however, and shall not make further comment on this. Neither the first or this post was trying to troll you in to a response. I was merely trying to suggest that the best course of action was to just feel that warm glow that you are obviously a better person than the idiot who threw litter out of the car.

Good day

Meh. I dont think hes done anything wrong by reporting, but would i have done it myself?

Nah. Im too busy haha.

Good day

Hey-ho.

1) See post #43.

2) Again I think you might have missed the point that the Council have done something about it?

3) I've never reported fly tipping of a sofa so I can't confirm what the Council would do, I can however confirm that they were interested in the crisp packet.

4) You accused me of being upset, I'm not, simply frustrated.

I prefer the warm glow of knowing the 'idiot' may get a fine that may or may not dissuade him from doing it again. By doing nothing then there is no chance of him seeing the error of his ways.

Just to say the dropping of litter hasn't got me 'het up', again please take a good read through my opening post - it is as chilled and honest as they come.

More the double standards demonstrated by the minority on here that are quick to say they don't drop litter but in the same breath are happy to criticise those that actually bother to do something about it.

This suggests to me that they are either dropping litter themselves or are happy to wallow around in other peoples rubbish.

Neither of which I am prepared to stand around and ignore.

'Self appointed warrior'? In case it isn't clear already, if I am witnessed dropping litter, running a red light, doing 40mph past a school etc. by a fellow road user on his Go-Pro or dash cam and a few weeks later I get a letter through the post from the Council or Police inviting me to explain my actions then I'll hold my hands-up, apologise and take the punishment I deserve.

For what it's worth, I agree with you silver and I'm glad you did it, at least you have some resilience and integrity.

As for the comments saying council won't do anything, as you've said they have and having worked for a local authority for 11&1/2 years in the past I know generally they'll be more than happy on stuff like this. As will the police. Yes you'll also find a couple of people who won't act because they are a lazy waste of space but generally in the whole they will.

I can see what you're saying

I live in the middle of the Peak District, plenty of nice country round, but if you stop in a traffic jam or whatever, you can sometimes take a glance to the greenery at the side of the road, and its lovely in the distance, but next to the road theres crisp packets, drinks bottles etc etc, which is a little buggin.

And I've had a mcdonalds bag thrown at me whilst riding the motorbike following a car at about 60mph. Its not pleasant. He was infront of me for about 1 second after i got pee'd off and flew past. But i did refrain from taking it any further.

More fool you for not doing something about it.

I sent a short note to the guy from the Council who dealt with my email thanking him for his efforts and praising the attitude of the Council and their determination at helping to reduce litter.

More fool you for not doing something about it.

And whats the other option?

Spend time reporting it to someone in an office which doesnt care, for them to contact the offender and them deny it, and it go nowhere?

Or maybe wait for them to arrive a the next town and pick on em myself?

Neither of which would get me anywhere, Id rather enjoy my ride out, and spend the time i could be reporting, doing a job and earning good money.

Look at realistically, you can be a lot happier just letting things go sometimes.

What they did was more than littering, it was dangerous.

A Big Mac and strawberry shake is one thing, a lit tab end inside a helmet is another. Someone who doesn't think twice about lobbing his fast food wrappers out the window despite a bike with its headlight on in his rear view mirror won't hesitate to throw other stuff out too...

But its not a huge problem. If i was tail gating itd of perhaps been an issue, but following at a safe distance, avoidance is necessary but im not dead, then by simply opening the throttle i sailed past on the furthest side of the opposite side of the road, and im gone, its gonna have to be a Bossfox equivalent on the Punto forum for me to see that again.

Honestly, if it takes me an hour to report and sort it out (within business hours or not) i could of been on a job and earnt more money than its worth, for me.

Just gotta let things go as a bad experience and move on, reporting everything gets you nowhere, leave that for when you're retired aha.

What's the alternative, they do it to someone else and they come off their bike and injure themselves or others. As for letting it and there's no point that translates to, can't be bothered/lazy or scared to put pen to paper to report it.

It's funny how you preach letting things go will make you feel happier yet you are hey to berate a person for standing up and doing the right thing and seem unwilling to let it go.

Anyhow I've said all I'm gona say on this matter.

I should also point out that the email to the council took a few minutes, downloading the video off the dash cam another few minutes, editing the clip a few more minutes and forwarding it to the Council the final few minutes, so a total of approx. 10 minutes. A nice break during a mundane day at work!

This thread, however, give me a tough time at work any day of the week  :D

Spot on, I don't bother to report anything now having had a very poor experience having done so and being told to **** off basically. More hassle than it's worth, I could've made money in the time I'm wasting over it,

Yeah? I dont see your point if im honest. If hes got the time of day to do it, good on him... But try working 80-90hours a week (which i was 6 months ago, and sometimes more) and still having the same attitude. You soon start to value your free time and trust me, reporting some ****e with no evidence isnt somethin you need to fill your precious free time with.

Just have a nice ride out, refrain from road rage, let it go.

People get so pee'd off over things, its ridiculous. Grow up. Let things go. Be the bigger person.

But doesn't me finding the time to do something about this scourge make me an even bigger person?

If you think something is important enough you'll always find the time. You've found the time to browse this forum this evening after all.

By the way, did anyone see EastEnders tonight? I need the reg. number of Alfie's Ford Capri and the email address of Walford Council  :D

If youve got nothing better to do, you crack on..

But the loss of earnings for me isnt worth it.

Bigger man? Try growing up, let things go, youll be reporting pedestrians for cutting you up as you're walking down the pavement next.

Let it go as a bad experience.

Crap happens, its a part of motoring, motorcycling even more so, you can report everything. Man up.

maybe if you are working these hours you too will be a danger on the road.

No.

maybe if you are working these hours you too will be a danger on the road.

Really?

When im still making a far better job of predicting peoples next moves and reacting before it happens.

Not being funny, but i do take great pride in my driving and riding.

Not being big headed, but theres not a lot i miss through the visor, windscreen or mirrors
