Witnessed a motorist dropping litter, caught on dash cam. Let it go?

Featured Replies

Nothing winds me up much in life, I'd like to think myself as pretty chilled, even behind the wheel.

One little bug-bear though that I really cannot understand is dropping litter. I'm one of those that takes a carrier bag with me when walking the kids to school or out for a stroll and pick up litter as I go!

This morning on my way to work I witnessed a white Jeep Renegade travelling in the opposite direction crack open his window and drop a piece of rubbish.

I haven't mastered how to shorten my dash cam movies yet so here is a screen grab / still of the car. You can see the rubbish (white blob) behind the Jeep, just between the armco and kerb. The clip does show the rubbish exiting the vehicle but isn't clear enough to identify the driver.

I appreciate that it isn't the crime of the century and that most people would let it go.

I really wish though that there was a process for alerting the authorities whether that be the Police, Council or DVLA and sharing the evidence so that a brief email or letter could be sent to the registered owner warning them that this behavior really is really selfish and completely unnecessary.

The joys of modern Britain. Anyway life goes on, back to work! :sun:

Received a response today from Durham Council...   Hi Thanks for that footage, have just PNC checked the vehicle it comes back to a car dealership in Newcastle. I will send them a formal warning t

Establish what local authority covers that road and send then an email to see if they will act upon your footage; if they say no, then you've done your bit.

Not sure if this is the case throughout the UK, but Glasgow City Council Litter Wardens issue on the spot fines of £50, rising to £80 to pedestrians, of which they have issued over 19000.

Haha, don't tempt me, I did wonder what I'd like to see on the MkIII Superb's options list. Until your post I'd never though of a set of bull bars...

No doubt these are long since legally or socially unacceptable!

Email sent to Durham Council...

Hi,

I witnessed a motorist dropping litter from their car this morning on the A688 on their approach to the roundabout with the A177. I caught the incident on a camera fitted in my car.

It identifies the car and it's registration plate but it it isn't clear enough to identify the driver.

Would the footage be of interest to the Council?

Thanks.

I've done my bit now.

I wouldn't hold your breath on it.

Grit your teeth howl at the moon and move on.

But I understand your sentiments having been hit in the face by rubbish and fag butts when on a motorbike luckily with the visor shut.

Unfortunately I doubt they will be interested. I have tried the good citizen thing  anumber of times and reported things to councils and police and now dont bother. If they cant be bothered nor can I. As annoying as it is. I would rather keep my shotgun in the car and spend 20p on a cartridge blowing their brains out and leaving their body in the road. Brain matter is biodegradable a double decker wrapper isnt!

It's the same as cigarette Butts. In my opinion a lot worse, happens more often and is absolutely disgusting. What can you do about it? Nothing.

Actually a bit severe that, but i did once pass a guy in a BMW back his empty coke bottle on the M25 when sitting in traffic. He did tell me to **** off.

As a biker, I once did the same thing with a lit fag-end that had hit me

I'm pretty sure the police may have an issue regarding this????

maybe all this poooower in your cars has gone to you head :p

Lets hope your driving is always perfect and totally legally carried out,

because often it is a case of, 'let him who is without sin cast the first stone. or just 'sauce for the goose'.

I am always driving and wondering who is filming and what they are seeing me doing wrong,

unsafe overtakes or the likes in their opinion.

There are so many Road Captains about, and now Road Captains with cameras.

Workmate discovered a video of her on YouTube  ofin her Disco overtaking a cyclist in a slightly pushy manner.

Cyclist was a road warrior with a lot of videos about roadside slights (none Daily Mail dramatic). However workmate was in the wrong.

Let's hope that in light of this thread and your obvious awareness of the increasing number of dash-cams that you drive with a little more care, attention and respect for those around you.

That risky overtake, passing through traffic lights on amber, 40mph in a 30mph, checking a text on your phone, dropping litter out of your window - all less likely knowing that you might not get away with it like you perhaps once did.

It's the same as the public CCTV debate, some see it as an invasion of privacy, others say if you've nothing to hide then you've nothing to worry about.

Personally if someone decides to shop me for lobbing an empty coke can out of my window then I'm all for it. No defense.

I've just searched Youtube for my current car's reg and my previous ones too....

No results found! :whew:

LOL,

I never said i did not drive with care and attention or any lack of respect or generosity or even goodwill to all men and women.

As to checking text on phones in moving vehicles while driving or the likes, that not me,

or dropping litter out of a vehicle, or any place actually.

Perhaps if you concentrated on your. driving, rather than being distracted by your thoughts of being caught on dashcam, you wouldn't make these stupid mistakes?

If you're struggling to cut down your video size, I'd recommend AVIDemux.

You can cut out clips from a video and resave the cut portion without having to re-encode the video, so is very quick to save files.

Sounds good, I'll check it out. I did a quick Google search this morning and Microsoft's 'Movie Maker' seemed popular.

I'll have a play this evening!

@ #18,  what stupid mistakes.?

Read what i posted.

'I am always driving and wondering who is filming and what they they are seeing me doing wrong,

(I am filming as well.)

I never said i do unsafe overtakes or make stupid mistakes, just that often others have their opinions on things.

I had a not at fault accident / incident with a professional driver just like Silver1011 had with a HGV,

Video evidence then would have made things simple straight from the off in both our cases.

Luckily both of us had witnesses.

post on the police and council facebook page

Not being funny here as I'm as guilty as the rest here ( I have a dash cam) but filming and recording other people/motorists - how does the law effect it?

As in if you have a static CCTV system on your property domestic or commercial you are bound by law to display a sign saying "CCTV in operation" for the purposes of "???" and the responsible person or operator of this system is "???" All recordings must be managed etc too.

Now if that applies to CCTV systems on buildings which also must have privacy /exclusion zones on them if they can view other people in their respective buildings.

Who are we to go around filming people how does the law effect us never mind posting our footage on open forums or the www?

Any pointers on this?

Are you really bound by law to display such a sign or is it a deterrent?

Be interested in what law.

As a individual you're not bound to display a sign as far as I'm aware, only companies have to. Same goes for vehicles.

Nothing to stop anyone filming in a public place, never has been either.
