New tyre report

Featured Replies

The Superb is 30 months old and 17.5k on the clock. I have recently had the original Bridgestone Turanza's replaced on the front to Conti SportContact 2, the tyres being 205.55.16, 91w.

Initial impression was of a very meaty/aggressive tread, and what looked like a good wet tyre tread.

First thing to notice was how the front end does'nt skit over bumps now, or crash over them. The front now tracks with confidence and absorbs bumps very smoothly. (You notice the difference more as you can use the rear for comparison...the crashing especially.)

We have now had rain, and now that they are scrubbed in I took them out in the rain for a run. They hang on really well, giving good contact with a solid confidence inspiring feel. When it comes to wet corners, they front now hangs on where the original rears (40% worn Bridgestones) actually start to loose traction. The front always gave out before the rears previously..especially around this particular roundabout near a certain tunnel).

I am very impressed with these tyres. They are very confidence boosting and give the Superb a good help with its ride, not that is was bad before just a little crashy over certain bumps.

Only problem now is do I bin the current rears in favour of another set of Conti's or do I run them down and accept the reduced grip/confidence/ride.

ps, running 33 psi front and 31 psi rear.

I have sport contacts on my Superb - probably fitted from new. I will need to replace at some time - where did you buy yours from and how much did you pay please?

And thats the sum total response?

well it covered 99% of uk superb owners....

I had the Continental sport contacts on mine from new, and only managed 16,500 on them before they needed changing. Now running some Kumho Ecsta on the fronts.

Well I only got 17.5k out of the Bridgestones on the front, so if I get 16k I wont be too unhappy.

I had the Continental Sport Contacts on my superb 2.8 elegance from new and they were worn out at 12000 miles on the front.I now have Michelin Pilots which I have used before on a tdi100 superb(same size on both cars) and got 40000 miles out of the front pair. The Continentals do feel a little better though.

Hmmm, I got around 24000 miles off my Bridgestone fronts, and probably would have got more if I had kept a closer eye on the pressures.

Recently changed for another pair of Bridgestones, which we got for

Just noticed most of the replies are from Comfort owners - so are all the prices for the 205/55 R16 size? I've got the Elegance with the 225/45 R17s so I suspect they will be a lot more. Ive got 18000 miles out of my SuperContacts so far, and will probably get another 3 or 4,000 so probably not doing too bad. I was wondering whether any other makes would cut down noise and give a slightly softer ride in this size?

My Tdi 130 was shod with Conti Sport 2's from new and I had them replaced at a 26K. They had a few millimetres left but found that they could just not shift the water anymore. As my car is leased, they were replaced with Dunlop Sport's (Z rated as Dunlop obviously don't do a 225/45/17 on the required Y). The tread pattern looks fantastically aggressive but overall the front feels slightly less planted than when the Conti's were on form.

Incidently, I have my tyres filled with nitrogen, which if nothing else stops the pressures from varying too much under temperature. Speak to your local commercial tyre depot and they should be able to offer this service (didn't top my fronts up in 26k, just stayed put at set pressure).

i would try one of the following p zero nero ir toyo t1.

Most Octy vRS owners run the same size. These two seem to give best grip/comfort.

A cheaper budget option (though still very very good) is Kumho ku31 - these ride very well but not quite as much grip as the Toyo.

As I said before I have Conto Sport Contacts (17") on the Superb. When I had done 20,000 miles or so I got a puncture in the left front. When I tried to get it repaired it only had minimum tread on it and so I got it replaced with the same again. Strangely the other 3 had plenty of tread left and the spare was unused. How come one only wore so badly??

Anyway am now at 22,000 miles and still got plenty of tread left - 5mm (frnt) and 6mm and 7mm (rear) according to recent service.

So with the exception of one tyre the contis are wearing very well - which is surprising considering my heavy right foot.

The ride seems a little harsh but can't complain about the grip.
