1.6 TDI CR Elegance Bought with hidden scratches, what to do about it?

Good comments. The 2.0 tdi is a good engine and certainly has enough power for most if a little thirsty but then again I'm a Dsg convert.

Hope you get what your after.

Thanks Octavianestate, I hope you can get the issues you are having resolved as well.  I'm not a big fan of DSG to be honest,  I like manuals.

And for some reason, the DSG box with the 2.0 TDI engine makes a not-so economical proposition.  61 MPG, compared to just under 69 MPG (approx)  ouch!! that's pretty brutal!!

Fair point, I don't trust the manufacturer mpg though. I hate traffic especially stop start traffic. That's why the Dsg.

Yeah,  It seems  that the quoted MPG figures from VAG are to be taken with a pinch of saly as they mean nothing.  i see them as a rough guide.  If I can get the 43 MPG average on my daily commute that I was getting with my Fabia, I'll be happy with that.  I got 46 with the 1.6 TDI ocatvia, and I always felt like I had to keep on top of the throttle pedal to keep up a consistant speed with it.  It lacked torque IMO.   Thankfully, I don't get stuck with too much stop start traffic where I live, It's not that badly congested.

All manufacturers have to do the same simulated test to measure the fuel consumption. Blame the EU, not the manufacturer.

I'm not arguing with you Andy, you are quite right of course, but I don't understand why some other manufactures, Toyota for example, quote figures that are far more accurate in the real world, Or so I have read!!

Possible Toyota doesn't try to game the tests as much as VAG. The EU is probably a more important market to VAG than to Toyota.

That's a good point, I hadn't thought about it that way.

This effect definitely got worse around the time that I bought my Focus (it was a '57 plate 1.6TDCi). It was supposed to do around 59mpg on the combined cycle, then they facelifted the car and upp'ed it to ~64mpg, then after they tweaked the engine a bit more they started selling ones that did high 60's in the official test (I think the 'green' version eventually got into the low 70's, although it's a while ago so I might be mixing my motors up).

In reality mine did low 50's with me driving (which was fine by me) and the subsequent versions probably did only marginally better, maybe I'd expect high 50's for the green one with me behind the wheel. They definitely started to play the system a bit more.

There's also a law of diminishing returns. 61 vs 69 sounds a lot, but compare it to the total running cost (including depreciation) and it's only a small difference. Now if it was 21 vs. 29 that would be different!

Geek42,  I totally agree with you!!  My experience has been similar.

I had a 56 plate 1.9 TDI Fabia Elegance estate.  I do mostly A road and town driving and got around 43 MPG with it.  Parkers guide (who use figures quoted by the manufacturer) states the average MPG should be around 57 MPG and that figure obviously included motorway driving, which the Fabia was of course more economical doing, So that 57 MPG figure isn't far from what you would expect in the real world.

I then bought the 2014 1.6 TDI Ocatvia 3 Elegance and doing the same A road and town driving I got around 46 MPG with careful driving.  For the Octavia, Parkers guide states the average MPG to be around 74 MPG.  Now, even if you factor in the better fuel economy you'd get while driving on the motorway, it's still very unlikely to be anywhere near that quoted figure of 74 MPG.

What you say about the 1.6 is exactly what i found with it. Weak at times, and always needing to keep my foot down on the throttle.. Its an OK engine (I would have brought one if it wasnt for the fact no decent colours were sitting in Emden (sorry Andy!!!!)), but not a patch on the 2.0, and Im glad I changed for the 2l.

The 2.0 is a very sweet engine. Plenty of power, plenty of torque, and hardly any lag. For a diesel, its as smooth as silk. In fact, its smoother than some petrols. I doubt id ever go back to petrol now.

Get it into 2nd or 3rd gear, then put your foot down. The car still shocks me even 1.5 years after buying it. Yes if you do this you'll hear the awesome diesel soundtrack, but boy does it give you a shove up the back. Just make sure there are no cars in front of you when you do this.

Regarding MPG, the combined MPG figures given in the EU tests are achievable on the odd occasion, but the extra urban figures are next to impossible to reach. Your average figure wont be near the combined EU figures, but they are possible on certain odd journeys. Ive beaten them on a couple of occasions.

Hey Guys,

Well, I've done a deal for a July 2014 2.0 TDI elegance in Cappuccino with 5,500 miles on it.  I pick it up this coming Wednesday.  If I can average 43 MPG on my daily commute to work then I'll be happy with that, but I do believe I should be able to do a little better than that with my driving style.  We'll see!!

The Power and Torque from the 2.0L engine is MUCH, MUCH more to my liking.  Very little turbo lag, and it's pretty refined for an oil burner.  I've only been driving my 325 Ti Compact sport for the last month or so and it's fairly quick, but the 2.0 TDI doesn't feel that much slower at all, which is nice!!  Sure I would have liked to have the VRS, but I  couldn't stretch to that money wise, and I wanted something with a more comfy suspension (compared to my BMW, which is pretty dammed firm), for everyday use, for me the 2.0 TDI Elegance fits the bill almost perfectly.  The only thing I would have liked is slightly more responsive steering, but I can happily live with it as is.

Glad it all seems to have worked out. The CR150 is a cracking engine, and deceptively quick :)

Thanks Andy  ,

Yeah, the CR150 seems like a good un!! I hope it turns out to be nice and reliable, I'll be keeping it for a good number of years.  Fingers crossed!!  I'll update the owners register once I have the car and will keep contributing to the threads in the Octavia mk3 forums where I can.  Great community here at Briskoda!!

The engines do seem reliable although it is still early days. Mine hasn't even hinted at missing a beat. Performs faultlessly all the time. Doesn't even moan with a heavy load. In fact doesn't even notice it
