1.6 TDI CR Elegance Bought with hidden scratches, what to do about it?

Featured Replies

Hey people, I'll keep this short Bought a 1 year old Octy 3 Elegance in Rio metallic red  from a main dealer 3 weeks ago, a week after I picked up the car, and after some really heavy rain, I came out of a super market to fine that the bottom of both the drivers side and passenger side rear doors covered in what looked like white rain droplets, on closer inspection, and having wiped the white droplets away, a whole load of horizontal scratches appeared. I can only assume that the super polishing job that had been done had been washed off by the heavy rain, revealing the scratches underneath.

After some wrangling with the main dealer, they have agreed to have the two doors re-painted and blended in to the original paint, and have also offered to repaint the front bumper as well for £150 as it has some stone chips and small scratches on it to, thought I new about those when I bought the car!!

This being a metallic red car, am I going to be able to see the difference between the two doors and the rest of the car after the jobs done, or should a reputable dealer be able to blend the paint in well, so it won't be noticeable?

Would you consider the offer to repaint the two doors a good gesture on the dealers part?  I've been discussing the issue with the dealer for over a week now, They have had the car during that time, and this is the best offer I can get out of them at this point.

Thanks!!!

Unlikely to notice colour difference on a one year old car.

Youl only notice the difference if the shading of the new paint is different,as there is more than one variation on a colour, a good bodyshop will get it right though

Thanks guys,  I would hope, that being a main dealer, they would be able to get the right paint shade for the job;-) ,  I was wondering if the effects of UV over one year would cause much of a difference in the shade of the paint?.  I guess I'll find out when they give me it back LOL!!

I think you've had a good deal there.  The dealer deserves a pat on the back as they could easily have told you to jog on. You really shouldn't notice any difference in shade.

As long as they do a good job I'll be happy, but I'll reserve judgement on that till I get it back.  I'm not sure if they intend to respray the whole of the two doors and blend that in to the rest of the car, or just respray the bottom half of the two doors where the scores/ scratches are and blend that in to the rest of the two doors.  I'll phone them tomorrow morning to clarify,  but I suppose either way as long as it's not noticeable I'll be happy.

Not sure whether to bother getting the front bumper done or not.  The stone chips are not that bad, but there is a bit of a bad score on it near the bottom just in front of the N/S front wheel. Looks like a big stone has glanced off it.  I suppose £150 to repaint a front bumper Is a bargain though?  AFAIK getting anything painted on a car is usually pretty darn expensive?

I think its an excellent deal, as Skovirg said, the dealer could have said it was fine when you collected it & you must have done it.

Perhaps they knew about it before hand though & hence their quick offer.

Make sure you check it in natural light outside before accepting the job from the dealer.

Often in dark, rainy conditions or under very bright lights its difficult to differentiate the colour changes.

O.K. thanks.  Hopefully it will be a dry day when I go to collect the car. I'm not sure when it will be ready to collect yet.  The Sales manager at the dealers has been very helpful, but I was given some false information about the history of the car prior to agreeing to purchase it.  I told the salesman that if it was an ex -rental car, then I was not interested, he assured me that it was not ex rental, at worse a lease car, but low and behold, when the V5  (log Book) arrived 3 weeks after I got the car, it turns out that it was an ex rental car after all.  I was not best pleased!!

That is why I always ask to see the V5 when purchasing a used car from a main dealer.

I once walked away from a deal as I was told it was 1 owner, I asked to see the V5 and it was 5 owners on a 3 year old car! They then offered to reduce the price, so I asked for a printout of all the service and warranty history and the car had been in to the dealers for multiple fault rectifications over and over again. In other words it was a lemon, hence why people kept getting rid of it!

If they can't produce the V5 they can't sell you the car nowadays .....

Yup!! Lesson learned.  The car does seem run o.k. with no issues thus far though, apart from the scratches down the side anyway.

Hey guys,

So, I went to pick up my Car today, having had the two doors repainted and the front bumper done too.  I could not accept the car though.  The paint is all "orange peel"  and there are two lumps of black " stuff" no idea what on one of the doors that has been lacquered over   I can also still see the deepest scratch on the door underneath the paint work.  IMHO, one of the worst paint jobs I have ever seen.

I don;t know if it's possible to fix the orange peel in the paint where they have tried to blend it in, but the two lumps of crud under the lacquer is unforgivable.  I paid £14.700 for a April 2014 registered car for a car that now has very poor paint down one side, and was miss sold to me as a ex management car, when it is in-fact an ex rental car.  This is not the level of service I expect from an approved main dealer.

Can someone please post the contact details for Skoda UK,  I feel I have to take this further.

The dealer has sold my old car that I traded in, but do you think it would be reasonable for me to expect a full refund of my money?  I have only actually covered only 200 - 250 miles in the car, but picked it up on the 25th of last month.  I only had the car for the first 11 days of that time.  It has been in the dealers possession ever since.

Very disappointing!!

Any advice would be most gratefully received!!

I would ask the dealer to source you an identical car that is not an ex-rental as they stated, or a full refund and go elsewhere.

Quick update:- Having lost all confidence in the dealer I bought the Octavia from, I called them back on Monday and, after a fair bit of discussion and a talk with the owner of the dealership, I got my money back.

So, I'm back to looking for another car.  This whole buying "nearly new" experience has really left me wondering if i should just go back to buying a 3 year old car that's already depreciated a fair bit.

I've read to many horror stories about DPF issues with diesel Octavia Mk2's doing low mileage, short journeys, so I've been thinking about jumping ship and buying a 2012 (ish) Ford Focus 1.6 TDCI Ztec Estate.  Can get one of those for around £10,000, compared to nearly £15,000 I paid for the 1 year old Octy Mk3

Anybody got any experience with "modern" Fords? I've not even driven a Ford since the Early 90's LOL!!  Are the Ford diesel engines any good?

Cheers!!

Sorry to hear of your problems. In respect of the 1.6 TDCI - ive run one since new (2008) and its literally about to go over the 60,000 mile mark this week. Its actually a PSA unit but arguably if the french can do anything right, its diesel engines. I'm quite a Ford fan boy tbh as i've owned many and never had a serious issue. Apart from an engine sensor this one has been rock solid and totally reliable over the 60,000 miles (and it was remapped around 7,000 miles). They can be a little agricultural in terms of outright refinement (although better in the Focus than the Fiesta) and the dealers are poor from experience. Ive had the use of two mk2 Focus estates now - a 1.6 TDCi Zetec and a 2 litre TDCi Titanium - both very nice and whilst not as big and outright as practical as the larger Octavia estate, they proved more than adequate with a well shaped load area. Handling is best in class as far as Im concerned. The only other negative was that a rear seat passenger that was in the rear of a mk3 Octy VRS estate that I had for the weekend, said that the Focus offered less headroom and shoulder room in the rear for her - not sure how important this would be for you but worth a mention! Good luck.

EDIT: My Fiesta 1.6TDCi thread may have some relevant info for you regards the engine ie mpg figures etc:

Thanks Yeti_Man,

That's some great info there!! Magic!!

I had a look on the Ford Owners Club web site looking for posts about DPF issues, but I can't see anytyhing regarding cars from 2012, Do you happen to know if Ford managed to resolve the DPF issues they had, like every other manufacturer, when they first introduced cars with DPF technology?

Cheers

2012 would have been the first DPF engines they had I think but I dont know of any issues really. I bought mine (the last of the non DPF 1.6TDCi's to arrive at a dealership) specifically because it didnt have one fitted but at work we have a couple of Fiestas and a Focus with them with no problems and I know two of them are mainly used locally only. Have a google for some of the Ford forums for info. :)

O.K. thanks Yeti_Man,  I've tried a few different word searches (google) but I can't seem to find anything relating to 2012 cars.  2009 - 2011 DPF issues I can find though, but of course the new shape focus came out in 2012, (ignoring the facelift model that came out earlier this year).  I would hope that for the new release Ford made some changes to the way the DPF was implemented, using fuel instead of an additive to help heat up the filter.  I'm just not sure where to find that kind of info though LOL!!

I currently (well until sometime this month when the SE-L estate turns up) have an S-Max 2.0 D power shift with DOF. Never had an issue in three years with it, mostly local (22mikes) journeys with a few long distance ones. Never had a DPF issue or fault

Thanks Warkman, that's good to know!!   Just for reference, what is DOF?

Tablet spell check, should have read DPF lol

I see from another thread that you are looking at another Octavia, but just for completeness I should point out that the DPF on the Focus 1.6TDCi uses an additive to lower the burning temperature of the soot. The additive leaves an ash deposit which doesn't burn off and eventually blocks the DPF, so the DPF is scheduled to be changed as a serviceable item at 75k miles (at a cost of £1100 according to my local dealer...I just decided to get shut of the car instead as I fancied a bigger boot anyway!).

If you're worried about DPF issues I think there are better units out there than the one fitted to this PSA 1.6, but I guess it just depends on how long you intend to keep it.

Thanks Geek42.  I've decided to plump for a Octavia mk3 2.0 TDI Elegance in beige, still looking for one at this stage

If you don't do big miles do not entertain the 2.0 diesel. Though if you shopping around your choices may be limited.

Also having had your fingers burned once with skoda I'm suprised you are considering another. I have plenty of troubles with mine and will never buy skoda again. I thought it's saving grace was the ride comfort until it was fully loaded for a family holiday. The ride quality is really poor. I know this is subjective again but the car feels dated in how it rides. Rolls and wallows, bumps shudder through the chassis. It's not good enough for the price, unless one approaches these with low expectations

The exterior styling is pleasing though.

I'm happy to buy another Skoda for two reaons. 1) I've had 8 good years of trouble free motoring from the pervious two Fabia's I had. 2) The car I had did, to be fair, seem to run just fine.  I found it to be smooth and refined for a diesel, and compared to the ride in my BMW 325 Sport, the ride was nice and comfy.  The only downside to the way it drove was the slight lack in power.  The 2.0 TDI engine should resolve that issue.

The problems I had were being deliberatly lied to by the dealer, and when they offer to fix scratches that had been cleverly hidden by doing some painting and blending, they made a complete botch of that too, so much so, I couldn't accept the car back.  It was the worst paint job I've ever seen, I'm pretty confident that a blind monkey would have been able to do a better job than they did, and this was a so called professional paint shop.   At that point, I lost all confidence in the dealer, and they had ruined that car, so for piece of mind, my only option was to get my money back.

I'm sorry to hear about your negative experience though, I hate it when things go wrong with a car, it's such a PITA!!
