oil pressure switch leaking

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I've been on a short trip yesterday and I might have punished my mpi engine a bit too much. My oil sensor switch is now leaking badly, I had to top up with about 1 L in less than 300 miles (when I checked the oil level was pretty under the sign). I am not sure when this started, but my guess is on the way back. It's pretty bad, anyway.

Does it have any seal that can or should be changed or should I just replace the sensor itself ? I tried pulling it one way or another and it seems to be there pretty solid.

Have you encountered this problem before?

Just replace the whole sensor itself, they're cheap. It has got metal washer but it's not replaceable. Are you sure the leak isn't through internals of the sensor?

I can't tell for sure, I only saw a lot of oil dropping from the sensor wire.

its a copper washer and they are replaceable COUPLE OF PENCE

Almost certainly leaking through the sensor itself. Almost impossible for the seal to have got damaged.

mine was leaking by there but not that much so i'd agree with the above

Should I be concerned about having too high oil pressure? I mean, I was enjoying steep mountain roads with a lot of tight corners and stuff, changing gears at high rpms and stuff, but still, it it normal to break a sensor this bad ?

Just replace it. No need for concern. :)

Thank you ! I'm pretty much a control freak and I have a thing for leaving the engine running a few moments when having a pause and checking under the bonnet if everything is in it's place. A faulty oil pressure sensor which is also leaking, might be a sure and straight trip to the scrapyard.

Probly about £6 for a brand new one from euro, wouldn't even go to the scrap yard for it.

I was thinking about the worst case scenario..faulty sensor leaking and oil and also not showing a low pressure alert in the dashboard.

Steve I'm not saying you wouldn't be able to replace the washer but there are not design to be replaced. They're the same type of captive washers as on the oil sump plug. For sake of £7, replace the whole sensor.
