Just had the alternator belt break off on the way to work and the power steering died. Got a tow to a garage and they have quoted me a total of

I think you have just been unlucky. Even if it happened within the 3 yr warranty I doubt you'd have been covered for over 60k miles anyway. The costs look about right to me though i'm no expert. I'd imagine the tensioner wouldn't be a common part to fail hence the high price for it. I read somewhere else on here that Skoda alternators are pricey. Sounds like whatever broke off your alternator did a fair bit of damage.

I think i'd like to see the evidence of the damage too though before getting my wallet out.

Stu - can you let me know details of your man for future reference? i was a bit stuffed this morning because the Octavia was just about undrivable without power steering so I had to get the car on a lorry to a garage.

Sounds like yours may not have had the clutch pulley on the end of the alternator.

VAG had problems with fixed pulleys on the TDi as when you stop the engine it rocks over half a turn backwards on compression. This had a nasty habit of un doing the pulleys which would then come loose and fly off. Remedy was to fit a pulley with a one way clutch in it so it wil only rotate one way.

The can make a mess when they go so im not suprised at the bill.
