Intercooler Logic

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I've just been wondering would there be any gain or loss from having an intercooler on a standard PD90 turbo? Would it just create more turbo lagg? of course it would have a bigger space to pressurise. I don't have a great turbo knowledge so I may be completly wrong but I would like to fit an intercooler on my Octavia 1.9TDI, If it does have any gain what would it be?

Thanks in advance :)

What car have you got with a pd 90 i thought min was a pd105 with a 1.9tdi?

That 90 was older tdi like mine or cr 1.6 on newer models?

Could be wrong though.

Either way the standard inter cooler is side mounted on the 1.9 lumps and with a 90 brake i doubt thered be any gains tbh..

Thanks for the repy.

Yeah it's an octavia ambiente 1.9 TDI 90 brake. Yeah mine currently has a side mounted. so would there be any loss? i would be fitting a front mounted with a bigger capacity

Cheers

No real point IMO unless you're playing with bigger turbos and/or more boost.

There's a scientific way to do it. Get a thermocouple in the piping post-intercooler and note or log the temperatures as you accelerate at maximum. Then when you change the intercooler, do the same.

I think you'll "win" in that inlet temps will be lower but without other changes I feel you won't gain power.

Right. Thanks for the info very helpful. Think I might fit it and maybe look to get a bigger turbo. Would I need a remap with a bigger intercooler and is there any chance I'd loose power. Also would a ko4s hybrid fit? And would I need a remap for that. Sorry for 1000s questions haha

There's a cheaper way, called Swiss-cheesing the RHF arch liner behind the standard SMIC. That will cope unless you want to get into stuff like a new injection pump core, bigger injectors, FMIC and a custom remap.

Eh.. the first thing to do is put the injectors from a 110bhp 1.9 tdi (non pd) in and get fueling adjusted. Instant 20pony increase.... its the only difference in the 2 cars... then look at remaps etc.. search on the mk1 octy section, been done/discussed quite frequently :)

Thanks very much got a better idea now. What I was thinking is a 130 turbo and injectors. Front mount then remap. Hopefully get 170-180bhp? Heard it has been done. Well I have a few options to consider. Thanks all for the advice will be posting the results if I get my arse in gear and stop faffing haha
