Upgrading to alloy wheels - sizes?

Featured Replies

Hi,

At the moment I have 6Jx15" ET47 steel wheels with 195/65 Nokia Nordman summer tyres on my Octavia (2.0 PD140).

I've found a set of  good looking OEM 16" alloys from a 2013 Octavia for sale locally - these are advertised as having 205/55 16" tyres and an offset of ET46.    These have the same bolt spacing and centre hole as my existing wheels.

Would these be suitable for my car?  The overall diameter should be the same, so there's no problem there, but what's giving me concern is the slightly wider wheel, yet with basically the same offset - or could this be just a case of a slightly wider tyre having been fitted to the same diameter of rim (I looked up on the internet that both 205/55 and 195/65 can be fitted to 6" wide rims).

Am I likely to notice any benefit from fitting alloys in place of the steel wheels (apart from obviously looking a lot better ;) ) and would there be any difference or advantage between 16" or 15" alloys?

Thanks!

Edited to add - a bit more Googlage has turned up that these are 6.5J x 16" Ilias wheels for Octavia III.   So, would these be OK on my Octavia II?

I would avoid 16''. Somehow I don't think that large wheels look that much better. What do you get by putting them? More expensive tyres - that's all.

Simply try to search for tyre prices for both sizes and see the difference.

I see that you are from Finland. It's obvious that winter tyres are mandantory during winter season. For example I can use winter tyres during summer if they aren't usable in winter (less than 4 mm; 1,6 mm for summer required). In such case same wheel size is needed. If the required summer tyre tread for you is like 3 mm then this advice seems to be useless :)

i have the same car as you and that was fitted with the same size steels as your and i upgraded to 17s with 225x45x17 tyres on with no issues at all hope this helps

atb kev.

I really fancy some of the illias mkIII wheels on my MkII. I run 15" alloys with summer tyres and 16" winters. Very little difference in handling, but the other way round may be a bit different.

They will fit fine.

They will fit perfect - probably look better than the 15" and definitely handle better.

@05/55r16 aren't an expensive tyre to buy when replacement time comes although I would be inclined to fit either 215/55r16 or 205/60r16.

Thanks very much to everyone!  Will these need different (longer, maybe?) bolts, or are my original ones for the steelies likely to be the same?

Should be OK as if you have alloy wheels the spare is a steel rim

And here's the result!

Can anyone suggest some new tyres for me?  Important factors are quietness, comfort, good fuel economy on long motorway commutes.

Thanks! :D

I have 17" Alloys on my Elegance, with 225/45 R17 Tyres. Rougher ride however, but handled fine in the winter.

I'm looking at Goodyear Efficient Grip Performance, which I can get online here in Finland with free delivery, the 91H rating is €82,40 and 91V about a euro more per tyre.   Does anyone have any thoughts, or experience of this tyre?  Thanks!

I find that size hard to believe.  Do you mean 225/45r17?

I think there are a few on this forum that highly recommend that tyre.  maybe do a search for "efficient grip"?
