Skoda Octavia RS TDI, variable service interval?

Featured Replies

Good day everyone,

When I bought my Skoda Octavia RS TDI (Manual transmission) I was under the impression it had variable service interval. Skoda informed me that the service will on the diesel usually take place at 30000km or 2 years, depending on what comes first.

My car was assembled and first in traffic on 2014-06-24, and it has now been driven 17000km when suddendly this morning it says "21 days until inspection".

This puzzled me a little bit, as I thought it would be something around 2 years/30000km. Even more so, it puzzled me because that is exactly on the day when the car is 1 year old. Coincidence? You tell me...

As I don't want to void any warranties and such, I decided I'd do the service anyway. So, called my authorized service dealer which is one of the biggest on Skoda here in Sweden. They asked for my licence plate and then the agent asks me what milage I'm on, where i respond "17000km", following that the agent says "But that's not right, this car is new - it should be either around 2 years or around 30000km's".

OK? So, what does this mean? - I replied.

Agent says, sometimes the service interval configuration gets "messed up" and has to be reconfigured by Skoda. He thought that might be the case, and told me I should speak to Skoda directly about it.

Naturally, I will do just that. But before I make the call I thought I'd ask the forum.

Anyone have any idea what's going on here?

My first service was at 18,500 miles (30,000kms) the little sticker they put on says variable mileage or yearly whatever is first

If exactly 1 year old does seem it might be on fixed but notification on variable is just that & depends on type of driving.  My previous Octavia never got beyond 13,000 mls (21,000 kms) on variable before service indicator, covering about 15,000 mls (24,000 kms) / year.   My understanding is only high motorway mls / kms will get to the maximum interval.  If only 17,000kms in first year a service will be beneficial.  Service interval can be set by the dealer so don't know why they are referring you to Skoda, they should be able to check the settings & adjust if necessary.

It does seem very unlikely that it would happen on the very day the car is one year old. I only drive highways, and I consider myself a careful driver.

Is there any way for me to double check that the car has actually been set to variable service intervals of 2 years or 30000km? Reaching some hidden menu by doing something?

I also have a OBD2-reader at home somewhere if that helps...

Sorry don't know anything about OBD2 reader as I don't have one. Hopefully somebody else can provide more info.

I am sure the cars are on the most part delivered with 2 year/up to 20k mile variable servicing config....so it'll say oil change service at 20k kms/inspection service at 40k kms (and whatever that equates to in miles...something like 9.3k and 18.6k from memory) and this is dependant on use and oil quality (as the car has an oil quality sensor)....you hammer the car it will probably need servicing sooner but perhaps only by a few K miles. Fixed 10k servicing are literally services every 365 days or 10k miles, nothing variable about it (oil quality sensor unused).

I got the 3 year servicing plan with mine...the attentive dealership I bought from (Jewsons, now sadly Ridgeway Skoda) changed mine to fixed so mine now tracks oil change (minor) and inspection (major) servicing correctly.

Dealer can change or of you can find a friendly local with VCDS it can be done with that too.

Its worth noting that in the UK the intervals are actually 10k and 20k miles and not the slightly lesser figure the computer calculates from the conversion between miles and KMs....typically when your car says service now you still have a fair bit of leeway before the car actually needs a service so just bear that in mind.

My vrs has been changed to fixed at my company's request and is saying it wants its second service (inspection and oil change) in 600 miles time at 18.6k miles - hence booked in for next week.

Hmm, that makes it even more confusing - because mine says "inspection in 20 days" not "oil service". And if you say this usually should happen after 40k it really makes no sense at all... :/

Right had a look at the Workshop Maintenance manual re the 'service interval display' - i've posted this before but have re-uploaded/attached part 1 here. See general points page 5 (pdf page 9).

The display depends on what 'QI' the car has been issued either QI1 through to QI6. The QI number is located amongst various other numbers in the middle of the sticker in the boot of the car at the top left of the spare wheel space.

QI1 - Service display 5,000 km or 1 year (fixed)

QI2 - Service display 7,500 km or 1 year (fixed)

QI3 - Service display 10,000 km or 1 year (fixed)

QI4 - Service display 15,000 km or 1 year (fixed)

QI6 - Service display 30,000 km or 2 years (flexible)

Considering mine is now saying it needs second service at 18,600miles (30,000km) and was supposed to be changed to fixed service schedules from variable on its first service, i think this has happened - it was first serviced 'late' for fixed service as it was done at about 12,000 miles, but it was using the variable service oil at that point - so should just an issue with the service display interval i guess. But thinking about that, the display didn't come up for the first service, i just asked them to do it after work deciding it should be on fixed - looks like they just didn't change the intervals or even reset the display!

Both of our work ones pinged up at 19,500 miles/10 months old.

There is only one way the service intervals get messed up - by the dealer at PDI.

If you look on your infotainment unit what does it say for the distance and time for both the oil change and the inspection?
