Rapid start at lights, roundabouts etc 55 plate Fabia vRS

Featured Replies

Advice on best way of a rapid start from the lights or any standing start in first please! I don't try it before the engine is warm.

Lots of "lesser cars" are pulling away faster in first than me :thumbdwn: - unless I nearly and ofter do end up spinning the front tyres which I am trying to avoid. Got my traction control on as normal - not faults showing etc.

The squeal can attract too much competition - sometimes

Then again second, third leaves them for dead

The car is a carmly run in 55 plate Fabia vRS - done 2.6K since new.

Cheers.

Philip

get towed by an octavia??

sorry, couldn't helpt it :)

but for the best get away a little bit of wheelspin is needed :)

but not spinning like a mad thing

dont boot it in 1st.. change into 2nd then clog it :D

I have the reaction time of a praying mantis (on speed) which helps  I match the clutch with the revs (no wheel spin) and change into second asap!

For out and out speed you need a little wheel spin, but sitting there at 3k rpm will make your opposition try a little harder too! ;)

With 150BHP / 155lbs/ft, you not one to really talk... ;)

150/155 :)

it must be the magic tree making the difference. think my exhaust is blowing too

SHusssh! or youll give away the well-kept magic-tree mod!

Throw the factory fit tyres in the bin, and get some good ones.

Failing that, turn OFF asr, and as Neo says, just get moving in first, then change into second and hoof it. Change at just over 3k, into 3rd, 3.5k, into 4th, 3.5k into 5th, 4k, into 6th. You will now be doing 130mph, and the lesser car should be behind you now....:D;)

Unless it is unmarked police Octavia vRS on the A1M in Cambridgeshire - in which case you will be reading an interesting flashing sign in the rear window.

But if phile pays attention, he can see how the police octavia made a good start, and learn, saving himself the time and efort of a police driver training course.

This magic tree mod sounds interesting, where can I get one from?

I thought it came as standard on the Furbie vRS? :rubchin:

No denis, your confusing it with magic mushrooms

I find it best just to drive normally until the Octavia driver thinks he has beaten you then floor it. A lot nicer IMHO.

I don't know, these lesser model drivers

I like the "make sure theres nothing behind you, rev it a bit, and pop it in reverse" method. Much more fun imo.

But traffic light grand prixs aren't the Fabias strong point, and as I'm a responsible driver, I don't bother. :P Oh, and have you heard that the pope has stopped praying!

Hi

For a quick getaway, I just leave the car at idle until I am ready to go. Floor the throttle and blend the clutch against the rising power keeping around 1500 rpm on until fully engaged, back off the gas as the torque climbs to keep the wheelspin from starting, back to full gas past 3000rpm and and in the space of a second and a bit you will be doing 3500-4000 rpm, change up and give it full throttle in second, but dont be clumsy with the clutch and gas or wheelspin starts up. You know when it is about to start wheelspin, the torque steer just starts to tug that bit more.

I read a few places that the Fabia vRS is difficult to get off the line, but in all honesty it is pretty easy provided you dont overcook it. I am very impressed with the way the car launches, for a front driver. It is generally much quicker than other cars in the cut and thrust of the roundabout entry / traffic light GP. It is even pretty easy in the wet. So far, I have only had the traction control intervene in a tiny way on bends in the wet, it seems to let you get away with a useful amount of wheelspin / understeer before chiming in, so I drive just under the ASR threshold which seems easy to predict.

PS Have done a bit of drag racing in the past.

leave the 1.4's alone will ya

all this talk of torque is making me hungry for my new motor to arrive..

however u've never experianced real torque untill u've thrased a saxo 1.0l running on 3 cylinders for 6months.

Oh yeah feel the power!

Tyres have made a big difference for me - especially when its a bit damp. Never paid much attention with the factory Michelin's. When I had Goodyear Eagle F1s the traction was fantastic - difficult to lose traction! Now with Avon ZZRs the traction is ****-poor. Going back to Goodyears as soon as the Avons are done - shouldn't be long - only had them 6000 miles and the fronts are about bald!!

I think it's extremely mean to go around bothering Octavia drivers, taxi drivers have enough hassle to put with already.

 Yes like silly little girly shopping cars getting in our way :D

Our Ibiza is pretty much the same car as the Fabia vRS and I have to say I've always been impressed with just how quick off the line it is for a FWD car. As said you just need to control the gas and clutch and a little bit of wheel spin seems to give best results. As someone else mentioned earlier don't bother revving at standstill, just leave it at idle. Tyre's do make a big difference though and the T1-R's have been excellent.

Thanks for all your replies - I think years of driving cars with a sponge clutch has weaked my left leg! Off to do some blending!
