Intelligent headlights?

Featured Replies

How can I tell if I've got the auto main beam headlights fitted? I have lane assist and Columbus fitted.

Thanks in advance

Hi - You will not have this if you do not have Bi-Xenons, standard lamps have a fixed direction and focus, the Bi-Xenons have a device that actively changes the direction of the beam. Which is why driving abroad with these head lights is so much easier they automatically change to RH driving mode when you leave the ferry (if you have a built in Sat Nav)

I have the bi xenons. Does the main beam automatically come on and dip?

Based on my Yeti - Yes, but you need to have the headlamp switch set to "Auto"

This quote taken from the brochure..

Intelligent light assistant*. Using a camera mounted behind the rear view mirror, the Intelligent light assistant* monitors light levels and determines what level of lighting is required. The car then turns on the headlights or if required, the high beams. Should another vehicle’s lights be spotted by the camera (either in front or moving in the opposite direction) or the light levels improve sufficiently, the car will automatically turn down the high beams. To activate this function the headlight switch must be sent to “auto” and the left stalk on the steering column be moved forwards.

OOPs - may have confused Intelligent Light assistant and Adaptive Front Light System (AFS) - its the latter that is Bi-Xenon only... which are you referring to?

Intelligent light assistant I think? Adaptive is where the lights turn whilst cornering isn't it? Mine definitely does that.

OK so you will have both then. In which case you just need to set the Light switch to auto and push the dip/main beam stalk forward (leave on main beam), the only reason for this not working will depend on the age of your car.

My 62 plate Yeti does the auto thing for low light, but not the auto dipping.

According to your sig you have a Ford Focus ST, so I cant help with that at all ;-)

On later cars Intelligent Light Assist comes with Lane Assist. If you follow the instructions from Vegit8 you will get a confirmation in the bottom centre of the maxidot (a light symbol with an 'A' in it). You can see this on page 17 of the brochure from Vegit8's link where they show the maxidot for Lane assist.

Only if you have High Beam Assist ( HBA ) activated. It's a factory option I think costing £300, mine was activated by VCDS for a bottle of red

You can tell if you have HBA, push the left hand stalk away from you and if you have HBA activated you should see a white main beam symbol on the bottom of your maxi dot, in the middle,  if you don't see the symbol you don't have HBA.

Intelligent Light assist (including Main Beam Assist) is standard on the SE (L) and the L&K - as you say its a £310 option for all other models.

Adaptive Front lights is standard with Bi-Xenons and cannot be added to Halogens

IIRC as Auric Goldfinger has, you can activate it HBA via VCDS, asyou have the lane assist camera its just a software thing.  Check out the VCDS known fixes at the top of the main O3 page it'll show you how and if you don't have your own VCDS there's a map somewhere on here.

I've got it and it works ok 99% of the time you'll get the odd flash back from on-coming drivers when the angle of their lights ain't quite right for your camera.

I take it you aren't asking about your Focus ST so give us a clue and which model is it?

Elegance & L&K will have it, vRS won't but as others have said, very easy to enable and save ££££££'s

is the reverse true? ie if you have an SEL with the HBA as standard can you activate lane assist from VCDS?

No, as the models without Lane Assist get a different camera for HBA

It's a 2015 plate vrs estate diesel

You will have the xenon lights with the AFS function (lights steer into corners in normal & sport mode, but not in eco or when set for driving on the continent as the motor is deactivated by software). You will have the auto lights which come on using a light sensor (you can change the sensitivity of when this comes on in the CAR >> Setup >> Lights menu on the infotainment). You will not have the High Beam Assist (HBA) activated from the factory, but as others have described, on the VRS this can be recoded to the car software by one of the members with VCDS software and cable as all of the hardware is fitted which will allow it to be enabled.

As above. Cars with Lane Assist have a vast windscreen mounted module containing the light/rain sensor and the camera for lane assist.

This camera is entirely different to the HBA module fitted to cars (mainly Elegance models) with HBA only....the HBA modulw contains a light sensitive diode (not a camera at all). It works but its only able to sense lighting levels and lacks the intelligence of the camera based system on Lane Assist equipped vehicles.

Cars with Lane Assist (and the associated camera) by default have the hardware capability to support HBA and also traffic sign recognition; these functions are not coded from the factory unless added as optional extras. With VCDS/VCP (as Andyvee would well acnowlegde as hes a bit of a wizz with it) you can code these things...HBA no problem, traffic sign recognition a little more problematic but can be made to work to some extent so long as the vehicle also has nav
