Scan & Email / Win7 vs XP?

Featured Replies

Iirc, I could scan (using the scan button on psc) and email the document easily on windows XP.

Newer laptop, using windows 7, this is no longer possible, the scan button does nothing.

I can scan it ok with the psc manager, but still unable to email a readable copy.

1 - Can anyone confirm categorically, should this be possible to do?

2 - How to do, if it is possible, and what might I be doing wrong? (ie save as, or filing)

There are a lot of people around (on the web) mentioning similar problem, without solution.

If it is not possible, without a paid for download for instance, how can I find out if win10 may sort this, and why would they have made it different from XP? Is 'live mail' different to 'email'?

I need to be able to send invoices easily (A4 sheet), and have had to post them in the past. Pain in the :moon: .

Is photographing, then emailing the photo, a viable option?

Any help gratefully appreciated. (feel free to assume I am a bit of a technophobe when it comes to computers, so thorough explanation if possible).

Cheers.

Sounds like a driver issue, did you download new Win 7 drivers from the printer manufacture or did you use the generic drivers built into Windows?

Hi Chris, If 'driver' refers to the bit with the printer manager (as I said, technophobe) then I think it would have been the manufacturer one???

Am I correct in assuming the generic windows one would be most likely to cause issues then?

Is there a way to tell?

What scanner (make and model) is it?  Have you tried the manufacturers support website - at least you'll know whether there is an updated driver. I have a Canon scanner and although it works in 7 - none of the buttons on it work either.

One solution is to buy a new scanner as they seem to be quite cheap.

HP psc 1310.

Older scanner can be a bit of a PITA.

If you're having trouble sometimes a generic TWAIN driver from the manufacturer can do the trick.

Yet it worked with windows XP.

Is that because it needs an updated driver? I will have to look into this further.

Hate messing with computers, when I'm not sure what I am doing.

Give me a kitchen, and I can fit it with my eyes closed. Might not be level, but you know what I mean,  Lol.

Sadly HP didnt bother with Win7 drivers for most of their pre Win7 devices, they expect you to survive with the basic driver built into the OS. I had exactly the same issue with a rather expensive SOHO printer bought less than 6 months before Win7 came out; the Win7 drivers never appeared, and the built in driver loses duplex support, wireless support, network support...........

In fact, the very last XP driver update for it seemed to deliberately sabotage the printer, causing BSODs when you try to connect using a USB cable - it is only stable when using ethernet or wireless.

One of the reasons I have stuck with XP for so long.

Some of the printers had a Vista driver issued, you could try to force your machine to use that, and see if it helps..

Depending what your exact usage is, I have found the Epson Workforce WP4535 to be a perfect beast, and the ink works out cheaper than a laser.

Ok, looking a little further

Is 'windows live' different from 'hotmail'?

As - after successfully scanning the document, if I click on the Forward as E mail tab at the top (in windows fax and scan), It automatically brings up 'windows live. I log in using my Hotmail password?

I cannot enter an address to send it to, yet the cursor is flashing in the address box.

I do not even know if I have a 'windows live' account. All I know is that I use 'hotmail'.

if still recommending the driver update, I will look into this next, I promise, but the nearest update to mine is for the psc 1311, rather than my 1310.

Thanks for the links guys.

Yeah live is the same as Hotmail just log in as normal.

An update, and a thank you for the advice.

As it happens, my printer turned out to be HP1310 series and is actually a 1317. I did not realise this until looking into getting an updated driver. I thought it was a 1310, and could not find a driver for this. It is a good printer, especially for what it cost me and it has pictbridge for printing photo's, which was why I chose this one.

Anyway I managed to get the driver update that I required with your help and through some miracle (or a lot of trial and error and perseverance) I now have a PDF version of my invoice sheet in my 'my scans' folder and can select this, and fill it out on a weekly basis using Adobe reader X1, to email to my contractors. Piece of pi55. And I did not have to purchase anything. Yippee.

I guess some of you guys would have had it sorted in maybe 10 minutes or so but it took me blummin hours. Oh well, saves me a lot of messin now though.

When you've been in the IT game enough years they give you a magic screwdriver that scares technology. That's why computers will often start working when the IT guy walks in the room despite being unusable for the past week.

Glad you got it sorted.

You also must not shout at them as the hard drives get scared and stop working correctly until you have finished.

(The above is sort of true).

Computers dont like working for my sister, she will regularly ask me to have a look because it is refusing to do something - I try and it works first time.

Another trick I've not noticed, but worked well for me is if the drivers off the installation disc will install, but device won't work in w7, but did in XP, then try the compatability assistant. If it won't install in w7, then try compatability installation using XP configuration. I've got an old Canon printer scanner( not a flatbed), and although there's install options in W7 for the printer, i have to use the drivers from Canon to install the scanner (Iscan Plus) and the XP option to use it.

Live mail is the option to use in W7 for e mail . Up to & including XP MS provided an e mail client in windows .But not in w7, so you need to download and install windows live mail to access your web mail from your PC.

I dont think all versions of Win7 contain the XP option, isnt it the Pro version and up??

It's in Home premium too

Possibly not. I can't comment as mine is W7 ULT .

OK, I am sure I read somewhere that XP mode would only be in Pro and above; although knowing M$ logic, the only version that doesnt include it will be the upgrade version - the one set of users that really need it!!
