European Motorway toll payments

Featured Replies

Not an advert - I'm just a happy user!

For those who are not aware, there is an online shop which sells transponders and vignettes for many of the European motorways systems.

apart from France....

From my point of view, the transponders (for France, Spain, Portugal and Italy) make life a lot easier, as I tend to be on my own so they save all the hassle of a RHD car at a LHD toll booth!

Via Michelin is a good website to calculate your toll charges and fuel costs for European travel

If you have a Sanef "Liber-T" transponder which covers all French Autoroutes, they bill you monthly for any use in the preceding month.

My last bill from Sanef, for April, from Geneva to Toulouse and on to Perpignan, then from Perpignan to Paris, came to £165.72.

This month's bill, for Paris to Calais (on May 1st), is for £20.48.

French Autoroutes may make your journey quicker, but they sure aren't cheap!

Cheers

Simon

True.

A couple of years ago we took the Octy from Calais to Bologne.

It cost us more in tolls than in diesel!

Thanks for sharing this - I'm over to Croatia every couple of years with the family so this will come in dead handy.

Mods - I spend a lot of my (retired) time driving in Europe - by the end of next month I'll have driven in around 20 mainland European countries in the last 12 months - if you are interested, I'll put together a briefing as a sticky.....

You can also use the sanef tag in Vinci car parks in france.

Don't trust this guy people. you can't trust us Fifers one bit, especially if we're from Dunfermline lol.

In 2000 we bought a house in Picardie (renting in UK). Until last year when we sold it we used to spend all holidays and long weekends down there. We got a Sanef transponder, which made the journey down the A16 from Calais soooo much easier. The best bit was when there was a queue at the payment booths during the holidays, and we could stroll through with a regal wave to the queuers! Bliss!

If you think France is expensive for tolls you should try Italy. The Autostrade are even more expensive than the french Autoroute, and unlike France you have no choice but to use it. At least in France most toll roads have a free albeit slow alternative.

Spain is actually quiet cheap on tolls for long distance travellers, compared to both France and Italy.

I have a French Sanef tag, but mine is issued by Sanef France. I've had it for many years, they charge my UK credit card as opposed to bank account and there are no additional charges like those imposed by Sanef Tolling UK. Obviously you need to understand and speak french to speak to customer services, for example to change payment details but not usually a problem.

Ah - but I'm not a Fifer, I'm an Aberdonian ;-)

It's like role reversal with us two.
