HPI Check - Private Plates?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm on the cusp of buying another Mk1 Octavia vRS, after many months of looking. I've since found a really tidy motor, but it seems to have an unfavourable gap in it's history.

I know that a HPI check will confirm the number of plate changes, but would it detail the number specifically?

Problem is, the last 4 years the car has stamped services in the book, leading to the current mileage, though two of the services were at a local garage that has no recollection of the current number plate, and they're reluctant to assist much further (checking dates, addresses etc). The car doesn't have the invoices, and to me, this is ringing alarm bells. It apparently had a major service with a local, reputable VAG specialist in January, which included timing belt and so on. I know that it's possible that the car has been looked after, but the garage themselves said the book shouldn't be stamped if it's been worked on for beer tokens.

The car has history from the first owner, which is all in line with the invoices, though this gap is really niggling at me. I don't want to waste a further £20 if it's not going to tell me what I need to know to try and fathom out whether it's genuine.

Anyone able to contribute?

Thanks in advance,

Keith.

My car was on a private number plate before I got it.

If you know the previous plate which the HPI should come up with then you can call the places with the service stamps and they can confirm they're correct.

I had a nice dealer to talk to who provided me all work done on that specific car, minus the customer details. No harm in trying to get that info.

Sounds like the previous owner have a close relationship with the garage though, and may not be on the books?
