Recentely my computer has started to turn itself off, but not completely. it goes into

'improper shut down, checking discs for errors'

Then i can cancel this and it goes to active desktop recovery and then i can continue until the next time it all happens.....

Is it possessed?????????

Have you run a virus check recently?

Yes, using trend pc cillen, also lets me update everytime i switch on

I know this is gonna happen because the curser starts to lag and then......arrghh

first problem is windows ME that operating system was so bad even microsoft admit its crap

Hi Pixi

I'm on WinME also :sofahide: The main problem I have found with WinME is the way it uses, then releases (or more particularly doesn't), its resources. For this reason, I have set the "Resource Meter" (available via System Tools) in the System Tray (near the clock, bottom right of screen). The meter will start at bright green, then progressively drop to yellow, then red. If in the red zone, the computer will probably hang, so should by then have closed down all extraneous running programs (a whole other subject), or just close everything down and re-boot as it's the only way to recover "reserved" memory on WinME.

That said, mine has never "turned itself off", hence thinking virus or trojan or hijack here... If mine is "low on resources", it will give a warning (and I can also see that from the Resource Meter). It has never closed/restarted of its own accord. It will hang, from time to time, depending on what's running together at the same time, but restarting on its own definitely rings an attack alarm bell to me.

Hope this helps

Hmm, interesting :rubchin:

I will do another full scan and see what gives when i return from work tonight.

Thanks

Pix :P

Hi Pixi - that wasn't much help if you've already been attacked.

You said "recently" started to happen? Can you go back to a System Restore Point before this? If you can, I'd suggest you do it, but make a note of any software you've downloaded since that date, as you'll almost certainly have to download it again when Restore is complete.

Aside from PC cillen, which is perfectly reputable from my knowledge, though whichever such program you use, attackers will be caught by some software, but no software prog detects all, in my understanding.

Thus, if you are using PC cillen, fine. What other "safeties" have you got running? (I.e. spyware prevention, spyware detect/remove, browser hijackers prevention etc? What firewall are you running?

Have you done a Housecall's "Trendmicro" check?

I'll try to help if I can, but not much to go on at the moment.

Hard disc could actually be bad, run a checkdisk at the very least (scandisk IIRC on W9x/ME) with a full surface scan enabled.

ME had a tendency to totally get corrupted over time - especially if you actually used the PC for anything :(

Quite so, but ignoring all that: Happy birthday :) What do you have planned?

Meanwhile, back at ranch... Running Scandisk in WinME successfully, as you will know, is an art unto itself, if "re-starts = failure" are to be avoided. (Also applies to Defrags).

Happy to post further if anyone is having problems.

True  Other things to check on are (1) is the CPU overheating? The amount of crud that can collect on a heatsink is unbelievable (2) is the PSU OK? A faulty/overloaded PSU can cause unexpected shutdowns.

Quite so, methinks, considering the "carpet felt" under my cover despite vacuuming (suction hose) all vents regularly.

That said (and good advice in the generality from us all methinks), I'm still inclined to wonder about Pixi's symptoms of re-starting / doing it's own thing". Process of elimination perhaps?
