4 days into my new my15 octavia vrs...

Featured Replies

and I am loving the car but as I do with most new toys I am currently in my hyper sensitive phase. The car is on a PCH deal for 2 years.

On the day that I picked the car up, I noticed some strange marks on the top leather part of the steering wheel that looked like the leather had been nicked or scuffed on something right next to a small part of leather that looks a little darker in patches than the rest.. It's hard to see this on the photos below but the "scuff" is visible.

I am not usually one to complain and would not mind as much if this mark was on the seats or the leather on the door or something, but this scuff is right in my eye line and now that I have noticed it, I am finding it annoyingly difficult to ignore it. The analogy that one of my mates has used is that "you wouldn't buy a new TV with a crack down the middle of the screen would you"

Room for complaint or drama queen esque ?

Another thing that is concerning me is the leather parts of the vrs seats nearest the doors creasing a little already (only 4 days and 400 miles in). It is not drastic but it is noticeable especially after getting out of the seat.

Anyone else observed similar behaviour ? Is this to be expected and I am just being over sensitive ?

Cheers in advance folks

J

Hi glad you're enjoying the new car, personally the mark on the steering wheel wouldn't bother me. I've done 1600 miles in my new VRS and the seats are showing minimal wear, I know what you mean but really again it wouldn't bother me. But everyone is different in how they view things.

Just my 2p worth

It is annoying when you notice things like that, but the soft nature of the leather lends itself to marks.

If it really is bugging you then best thing to do is mention it to the dealer - even if they don't do anything, at least get them to note it so you're not liable at end of the lease if anyone else picks it up.

First stone chip or parking door 'crease' will make you forget the steering wheel though - annoying but it happens.

The seats do seem to be a cause of concern for some, plenty of posts on here about saggy leather.

As for the steering wheel, mention it to your dealer, but I wouldn't expect a £1000 warranty job including labour to get authorised from the photos you have provided. The only way you could have got that sorted would have been to reject the car at point of collection and put the pressure on the dealer.

The 'mark' on the steering wheel looks to me as if it could be smoothed out, or at least reduced, by rubbing with the back of a spoon.  But then I haven't had a brand new car since my last company car in 2003 (Audi A4).

Maybe a good detailer could sort the steering wheel out for you and the dealer foot the bill?

Ouch does the steering wheel alone really cost upwards of a grand ? The annoying thing is I did spot the mark(s) out the corner of my eye whilst the dealer was running through things but I naively thought it would rub off.

Have you had any issues with cabin pressure / boom? Obviously hoping the answer is no but just curious.

Mine is just over a week old and has already made one passenger physically sick! Back to the dealers tomorrow !

Thanks for the response mate. Hope you are enjoying your car too.

Nope, but factor in stupid dealer labour rates and you will be well north of £600

Thanks mate. Yeah I can imagine it would fall into insignificance if something like that happens.

I have mentioned it to the dealer who says they are investigating so will see what the outcome is.

Lesson learnt for future car pick ups. Fine tooth comb will be out next time.

No mate not as of yet touch wood.

That sounds horrendous.

Hope it gets sorted.

Just noticed, you are leasing.

Tell the dealer you want it writing that the damage was there on delivery and you can't get charged for it when you hand the car back in 2 years time, and that you want the same in writing from the leasing company.

Thanks mate. I may have to resort to the Uri Geller treatment dependant on the outcome of the dealer investigation :).

Thanks for be advice mate. I did mention it and report it via mail to the dealer the same day I picked the car up and it was acknowledged but as you say I could probably do with something more formal.

In my experience leasing companies can be rather strict on the 'fair wear and tear' rule, I have seen some horrendous excess charges at the end of a lease - about £600 for a stonechipped headlight in a Nissan Micra because apparently the bumper had to come off - we got one from the dealer for £60 and fitted it in 5 minutes before handing the car back, and guess what, the bumper didn't need to come off - they were thinking of the previous generation honest!

Ref the leather creasing...I have a Yeti with leather and have to agree, it does not take long for the drivers seat to show this type of use. It cannot be termed wear, its just creasing where the hump gets folded when getting in. I have looked at many Skodas fitted with leather and they all show the same thing.

As long as the finger is not going to be pointed in my direction at the time of handing the car back I suppose it's just one of those things I will have to bear with (as annoying as it is).

I found that a good treatment with autoglym leather cleaner followed by leather cream makes it crease less, mine did the usual creasing but its not got worse with regular treatment, my new my16 vrs is coming in tommorow, im hoping the seats stitching improvements made last year is going to improve fit n finish of a dec13 built car

Good advice. I clean and treat my leather 2 - 3 times a year. Keeps it nice and supple.
