Colombus/RNS 510 firmware upgrade issue - no audio

Featured Replies

Hi guys, hope someone much more knowledgeable than me can help me out.

I've got a 58 plate Superb, recently the Columbus unit died, fell foul the infinite restart/reboot issue. I tried the reboot option (holding <> $ i) but still had the same issue.

So I have tried to upgrade to a new firmware. I downloaded, burnt and updated to 4120 and everything seemed to go ok, but I don't get any sound from the speakers from the radio, sd card, cd or aux input. I've also noticed that i don't have the 'surround sound' menu anymore. The car has the 10 speaker sound system.

The details on the rns from sticker on top of the unit are: 3T0 035 680 HW: H03 SW: 0904

And from the secret menu post update it reads Delivery Part Number: 3T0 035 68O B HW-Version:H03 SW-Version: 4120

Any advice would be gratefully received.

The firmware might be too new for the Columbus in a 58 plate. If it is an older revision A or B unit (as is likely if factory fitted and with the original part number you give), a modified version of 4020 is as high as you can go. Damage to the radio board can occur with 4120, which sounds possible in this case.

Before panicking though it is worth checking the coding of the unit. I am not sure why it would be altered by a firmware upgrade, but it sounds like the option to enable the upgraded speaker has been turned off. That would explain the lack of the menu item, so worth getting it looked at in VCDS (see the members map in the VCDS section).

Ok thanks mate, is it worth trying to roll back to an earlier firmware, like 3xxx before looking at in VCDS? If the radio board is damaged, can it be replaced within the unit or would I have to replace the whole thing? From what I've seen they're quite pricey right?

Thanks for you help, much appreciated.

You could try rolling back to 4020 for older European units from www.rnsfirmware.com. To do you will need to enable SW downgrade from the secret menu first.

If required, the radio board can be replaced and not sure its too expensive actually. I have a feeling rustynuts (who is worth asking about this) is selling rns510 parts and may have one.

Ok cool, will try that tonight. Noticed a couple of other anomalies this morning. The HDD isn't accessible anymore, and there is no 'Audio' menu on the MFD. Not sure if that's highlight the problem any further, but I'd thought I'd mention it. Cheers.

That could also indicate a firmware install anomaly at the point where the gateway is updated but could still be the sound board. Hopefully the firmware fix will sort it. Good luck.

If you've gone up to 4120 from an early version then essentially you've reset the unit to factory spec. The hard drive will have been formatted so there's no maps or music on there any more, the internal coding for sound systems etc, will have been wiped, and first thing to do is recode the unit to your cars specification. That should get the audio working again, and then reinstall the maps and reload any music. At this stage I would resist the temptation to make things more better by throwing more firmwares at it, because it seldom helps.

Ok cheers, yeah the hard drive has been formatted, I reinstalled v11 maps successfully. Weird thing is that the hdd button on the media menu is greyed out and I cant copy music from the sd card as before. Can I recode it myself? Or does that require a VCDS?

You need vcds to recode it. Whereabouts are you?

Ok, in Horsham, West Sussex. I noticed there are a few VCDS guys around this area.

Miles from me I'm afraid, so I can't help. Someone should be able to sort it for you though and get the coding correct, then see what we've got.
